Chapter 124
Elena’s POV
I woke to an intense pain in my chest.
It was greater than any pain I’d felt before-greater, even, than the pain I’d felt when I had experienced death for the first time. It burned through me like a wildfire raging behind my ribs, spreading outward to every muscle
and tissue and sinew.
I gasped, pressing my hand to my chest, but the contact only made the pain worse. I heard Tyler’s voice in the distance, but I couldn’t make out the words. I could only feel the pain.
When the first wave finally subsided, I finally managed to crack my eyes open with a groan. I found a familiar face hovering over me-the healer… Jayne, I think her name was? My head felt so fuzzy, and I couldn’t seem to recall how I had wound up here.
The last thing I remembered was… I couldn’t even recall. I saw vague shapes of dark pine trees and shadows when I closed my eyes, but everything else was a blur.
“Elena? Elena, can you hear me?”
The healer shined a tiny flashlight in my eyes, making me squint. “Y-Yes,” I managed. My voice was hoarse and raw, like I’d been screaming, or like I had swallowed a bundle of lit matches. “Where… Where am I?”
“You’re in the infirmary in Nightshade pack. Do you know your name?”
I knew that much, at least. I nodded.
Jayne let out a breath of relief and straightened, tucking her flashlight back into the pocket of her apron. Just then, the infirmary doors slammed open, and a moment later, Samson and Tyler came running to my bedside.
“Elena!” Samson skidded to a stop, eyes going wide. “How are you awake?”
I furrowed my brow as Tyler rushed over to me, clutching my hands and smiling at me. “You shouldn’t have woken up yet,” Jayne clarified. “The poison should have taken days to leave your system, but it only took one transfusion for you to wake up…”
Poison.
Suddenly, it hit me. I remembered everything with sudden, sickening clarity, as if someone had pulled away the shroud covering my mind and filled it with flashes of the most horrific images I could think of. A nightgown covered in blood. Serena towering over me. A knife. Nellie…
In a rush, I told them everything. I told them how Serena took me out into the wilds and stabbed me in the heart with a poison-tipped knife. I told them about my child, about Kade… I told them about all of it, and listened to Tyler’s story of how he found me, broken and dying and surrounded by the very same rogues I had helped before.
When I was finished speaking, I was breathless and my voice was coming out as hardly more than a tiny croak. Even telling my story had sapped my strength, but I still wanted to return to Crescent Hollow. I wanted to get my child back before it was too late. I tried to sit up despite the pain.
But before I could move too much, Samson placed his hand on my shoulder, gently pressing me to the pillows.”

You can’t go yet, Elena. It’s too dangerous.”
“But-”
“Your body is still extremely weak. Your heart was just barely missed by the knife, thankfully, but it’s struggling to pump blood to the rest of your body.” Jayne gently removed the stethoscope from my chest and hooked it around her neck. “You’ll need to stay in bed for another few days, at least.”
“You said that I recovered more quickly than you expected,” I pointed out.
