Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 126

Chapter 126

Kade’s POV

Ivy hadn’t stopped crying all day.

Kade had tried everything. He had tried rocking her. Bouncing her. Taking her on walks through the gardens for some fresh air. Opening her nursery window. Nothing was working; she just kept crying and crying, her little face scrunched up and red as a beet.

With each cry he heard, the pang in his chest grew tighter and tighter. The timing was too perfect-Elena had left the pack, and now Ivy wouldn’t stop crying. It was as if she missed her. As if she wanted her to come back so badly that she refused to calm down until she did.

Of course, Kade knew it was just a coincidence. Ivy was just a baby, and had only spent a few days with Elena before everything went wrong. The healers said that she was perhaps traumatized from everything that had happened, and it would take time for her to go back to her normal self.

This fact alone made Kade believe that he had made the right choice in sending Elena away, even if seeing Ivy like this broke his heart. The wedding with Serena was in just a couple of weeks now, and although Kade didn’t feel as excited as a normal groom probably should, he was glad he had made the decision. If Elena’s meddling had traumatized his daughter, then he never wanted to see her again.

So why did it fucking hurt every time he thought about her?

Kade was pacing his study, bouncing Ivy in his arms in the hopes of soothing her to no avail, when the door opened. Priscilla entered with Alistaire leaning on her elbow, his cane clicking on the wooden floor.

“There you are, Kade,” Priscilla said. “The photographer is here.”

Kade lifted a brow. “The photographer? What are you talking about?”

Alistaire glanced at the squirming baby before replying, “After everything that happened, we thought it might be best if you promote your engagement to Serena with some proper photos.”

“I never consented to photos,” Kade muttered, turning away.

Priscilla sighed and hurried over to him, touching his arm. “Just one photograph, Kade. To announce the wedding and provide an image of a happy, unified couple.” She reached out as if to rest her hand on Ivy’s head, but then grimaced and pulled away. “Rumors are spreading about you and that girl, Elena. Your allies worried that your marriage to Serena might be… unstable.”

Kade wanted to argue, but he knew that his advisors were right. After everything that had occurred, the marriage seemed shaky on the outside. Maybe it was best if he took the photograph. Just one wouldn’t hurt, right?

With a sigh, Kade adjusted Ivy in his arms and made for the door. “Fine. But just one picture,” he said. He took Ivy back to the nursery, gently laying her in her crib. She cried even harder when he put her down, but he stroked her little cheek and whispered, “I’ll be right back.”

He found the photographer already waiting in the drawing room. Serena was with her, wearing a silky white dress that hugged all of her curves. Her honey golden hair was cascading over her shoulders in perfect waves, and she beamed brightly at Kade as he entered.

“There you are,

husband-to-be!” she cooed, rushing over and grabbing his arm. “This is Patricia. She’ll be taking our engagement photos.”

“Nice to meet you,” Kade said, shaking the photographer’s hand.

The photographer smiled. “Likewise, Alpha Kade.” She gestured to a sunny spot by the window. “I was thinking this would be a good spot for the picture. Something warm and domestic.”

Kade nodded, joining Serena by the window. The photographer carefully positioned them so that Kade was sitting in a plush armchair just so, and Serena was perched on his lap, one arm hooked around his neck while the other hand rested on his chest, displaying her engagement ring.

“Perfect!” the photographer exclaimed. She fiddled with her camera for a moment, then glanced at them. “How about a kiss for the picture?”

Serena gasped. “That sounds wonderful!” She dipped her head, eyelashes fluttering, lips parting.
