Chapter 14

Samantha’s POV

Thankfully, just a few days into my new life in Nightshade, Luna Natasha left. The energy shifted after that, and I felt relieved to have a little time without her suspicious gaze constantly boring into me.

The day she left, the doctor arrived to perform a follow–up exam.

“Strange,” the doctor said as he checked my body over. “Your body appeared perfect on the outside but very weak inside when the young Alpha first found you, which was strange. Now, your body appears to have recovered completely. Also very strange…”

I couldn’t help but grin upon hearing the news. So my body truly had healed entirely despite my history of abuse- and injury. I suspected my wolf had something to do with it, but when I reached out again to thank her, there was still no response.

Perhaps she was simply resting. She had been weakened for years due to malnourishment, after all. If she’d healed me, it had likely taken a lot out of her.

I just hoped that was all it was and that she returned soon.

Tyler and Samson, however, were beside themselves with righteous anger despite my recovery.

“Whoever made you a slave is a complete bastard,” Samson growled as the doctor packed up his things and left.” I’d like to wring their neck for putting hands on a young girl like that. I feel like the bastard who did it hurt my own sister.”

I bit back the urge to tell him that he’d have a lot of necks to wring and instead focused on the present–on the fact that my past was behind me and now I was surrounded by people who cared and comforted me. Who even saw me as a member of their family for some reason even though they didn’t know me.

Still, I couldn’t help but feel a deep and intense sorrow beneath the newfound optimism. This new family just reminded me that my real family had never cared nearly this much about me. Even my own mother took Serena’s side over mine, knowingly letting me take the fall for her actions. She had condemned me to years of abuse for a crime I didn’t commit.

Who treats their own family like that? It was as if I was never related to them at all.

Because of that, even though my body no longer bore the scars of my past torment, my mind would always carry it.

I came to that realization the next day, when Tyler took me to the Gamma training field for some light exercise as part of my recovery. The moment I saw the groups of muscular, uniformed Gammas, my heart began to race violently in my chest.

The Gammas were often the ones to torment me in my past life. I could never fight back against them–there were too many of them and they were all stronger than I was–and they knew it.

Seeing them look at me now brought back memories that I wanted to bury. I froze the moment I set foot on the training field and all those heads turned toward me.

“They’re staring at me,” I whispered.

Tyler stopped beside me and offered me an encouraging smile. “They’re just curious to see a new face. You’re the talk of the pack right now, given your unique introduction to Nightshade.”

The talk of the pack. I would have preferred to stay invisible.

“Tyler! You came!” a female voice called out then. I turned to see a tall woman with dark hair pulled into a braid over one shoulder jogging our way. She was wearing a Gamma’s uniform with a patch that had two stars on it on her lapel–a Gamma captain.

“Amelia.” Tyler’s grin widened. “This is Elena, the new Omega. Elena, this is Gamma Amelia, the captain of the female Gamma squad. She’ll be training you.”
