“Yes.” She came to stand beside him and watched the service with a strange look on her face. “I wouldn’t normally attend the funeral of someone I didn’t know, especially so far from Nightshade, but…”

Her voice trailed off as she spotted the picture of Samantha looking healthy and young–a picture taken before her enslavement. Something that almost looked like shock flickered across her face.

“What is it?” Kade asked.

The Luna’s mouth opened, then closed again. She shook her head. “Nothing, it’s just… Did you know her?” “Yes.” A muscle jumped just below Kade’s eye. “She was my slave. And my enemy.”

“Oh.” The Luna wrung her hands. “Why are you here, then?”

“To put the past to rest. Nothing more.” Kade’s voice hardened. “Samantha was a traitor. She was the one who caused my family’s demise–my parents‘ death and my sister’s assault.”

“I see…”

Kade studied the Luna’s side profile for a moment, noting the way her beautiful face suddenly seemed pale and drawn. Something seemed to have shaken her up, but before Kade could ask what it was, the casket began to be lowered into the grave.

He watched as the wooden box carrying his fated mate disappeared into the ground.

And for a moment, just a moment, a flicker of pain shot through Kade. It was so intense that he had to lean against the nearby tree to remain upright.

It was only because of the mate bond, of course. A physiological response to seeing his fated mate being buried. It was only because of the mate bond, of course. A phys Nothing more.

By the time Kade tore his gaze away from the scene to look back at Luna Natasha, she was gone. Odd; he’d met Natasha once at a pack alliance summit and she had been quite the conversationalist. Curious, he mindlinked Ajax and told him to follow her.

While Kade waited, he returned to watching the ceremony. Samantha’s casket was out of sight now, leaving behind only the grieving family. A chill wind swept through the cemetery, rattling the autumn leaves and making Kade shiver. Overhead, a dark cloud blotted out the sun and threatened rain.

Kade’s wolf was inconsolable, another reaction that Kade chalked up to the mate bond. “It’s alright, Ghost,” Kade thought to his wolf. “She was an enemy. A traitor–not someone we should be grieving.”

“But she was our mate.”

Ghost’s words struck Kade to his core. He bit down so hard he thought he might crack his teeth.

Mate.

What a strange and cruel twist of fate, to discover that the woman who had ruined his life was his fated mate and mother of his child. And now she was dead. Kade couldn’t decide if he was relieved or heartbroken. He would have preferred not to feel anything at all.

Just then, Kade heard Ajax’s voice echo through their mindlink.

“I contacted one of our allies who lives in Nightshade to keep an eye on Luna Natasha,” he said. “And he told me something… interesting.”
