Chapter 140
Elena’s POV
“No! She’s not your daughter, Samson! She’s lying!”
Natasha’s shrill decree may have popped the bubble of happiness, but it couldn’t fully quell the joy that Tyler,
Samson and I all felt.
Samson was my father. Tyler was my brother. No matter what Natasha seemed to think, it was true. I knew it now deep in my chest, in the same spot where I’d felt that tug earlier today—the invisible thread that bound families together.
Never in a million years did I think, when I woke up in this very infirmary all those weeks ago, that I would be unknowingly waking up in the arms of my family. It never crossed my mind. And yet here I was, being embraced by the father and brother I never knew I had.
I still couldn’t believe it; I still thought it was a beautiful fantasy, that perhaps I had never woken from Serena’s attack and that this was just the machination of a dying mind. Maybe I was already dead, and the Moon Goddess had sent me into an eternal slumber of the kind of joy I was never allowed to feel in life.
But deep down, I knew that this was real. Looking back now at all of those moments of connection, it all made sense. I wished I had realized it when I first mindlinked Tyler at the Alpha Ball, instead of assuming we were somehow mates-I wished it had occurred to me that we could be siblings, and then, at least, we could have had a couple more weeks of this bliss.
It didn’t matter now, though. I tried not to think about the what-ifs and the could-haves, and simply focused on this beautiful, perfect moment.
I had a family. A real family, one that actually loved me and cared for me and wouldn’t let awful things happen to me like my other family did.
Well… Most of them, at least.
When we pulled apart, we all turned to see Natasha seething in the corner. She was standing, her arms trembling at her sides, hands clenched into tight fists. Her entire body seemed to have suddenly turned crimson with fury, and her eyes looked like they were about to pop out of her head.
“Another trick,” she hissed, slowly raising a single, shaking finger to point at me. “Another one of her manipulations. She couldn’t succeed in seducing you, so what’s next? She’ll try to implant herself as Nightshade’s heir? Push Tyler out of the running and take the pack for herself?”
“Natasha. Be reasonable about this.” Samson strode over to her and reached for her, but she stepped out of his way before he could touch her. She lifted her hand as if to slap him, but seemed to think better of it and instead clutched at her hair.
“You can’t seriously believe her, Samson,” she whispered. “She has done nothing but lie and scheme since she arrived-”
“I have always been truthful,” I cut in, sitting up a little further now despite Jayne’s quiet protests. “The only time I withheld the truth was when my life was at risk in the beginning and I didn’t know if I could trust you all yet; but I took the leap of faith anyway and told the truth. Ever since then, I have done nothing but be honest and

true.”
“That’s right!” Tyler added. “Mother, she even took a truth serum-nearly killing herself in the process-to prove her trustworthiness today. Why are you continuing to insist that she’s some kind of schemer?”
