Chapter 151
Elena’s POV
“Wow. This place is really packed,” I said with a grunt as we stepped into the noisy tavern.
Tyler, Samson and I had to practically shove our way into the busy tavern, which was so stuffed with people that the crowd was nearly one dense mass of bodies. The air smelled of sweat and ale, and tobacco smoke had turned into clouds above our heads.
A tipsy male holding a pint of beer almost knocked into me, sending my wig slightly askew. I gasped and quickly fixed the fake black hair before anyone could notice.
Beside me, Tyler and Samson were equally disguised-black wigs, green contact lenses, and dark cloaks with the pickaxe-shaped sigil of Steelclaw pack sewn onto their shoulders. We probably didn’t look exactly like Alpha Harwin and his two children, but it would do for now. No one would give us a second look in this bustling tavern, anyway. It was way busier than I ever expected.
Finally, we managed to find a path to the counter, where Samson booked a room for us to spend the night in.
“The thought of staying here overnight still feels… risky,” I muttered, leaning close to Tyler. “I still think we should sleep in the forest instead.”
“That’s even more suspicious than staying here. Imagine if someone spotted our campsite.” His jaw feathered.” But we’ll take sleeping shifts just to be safe. And if anything goes awry, our Gammas are waiting just outside the border.”
I nodded curtly. Samson and Tyler had spared nothing when it came to preparing for this; they had ensured that we had reinforcements nearby should we need them, and multiple backup plans just in case the main goal didn’t pan out the way we expected.
We would only be staying for one night, too. Just long enough to corner Kade tomorrow morning in the chapel, before the wedding, and tell him everything. Our hopes were that he would be desperate enough not to sully his precious wedding that he would give us what we wanted: Ivy.
The plan should have been foolproof, but this was still Kade’s territory-and technically, although she wasn’t his wife just yet, it was Serena’s, too. I couldn’t decide which of them was the greater or lesser evil at this point. We had to plan for every possible outcome, good or bad.
Our room was much smaller than I expected, with two twin beds and a small foldable cot. The pitched ceiling made it hard to stand up fully in some areas, even for my short frame, and there was no private bathroom; we would have to share with the other guests on this floor, which meant there would be no hot showers tonight.
“I’m sorry I can’t offer you more than this, Alpha,” the innkeeper said as he showed us to our room. Everything else is booked up.”
((
“That’s alright. This will do just fine.” Samson handed the innkeeper some extra money as a tip. “Oh, and if anyone comes asking about us, please don’t mention you saw us. We haven’t seen Alpha Kade in a very long time and I was hoping to surprise him tomorrow.”
“Of course.” The innkeeper took the extra money and left us after that.
Once we were alone, I set my bag down in the corner and rubbed my sore shoulders. “I think I want a drink,” I

sighed. It had been a long and slow journey-the roads were full of traffic what with how many people were coming to Crescent Hollow-and a stressful one, at that. I had been a bundle of nerves the whole way, practically vibrating with fear and excitement in the back seat of the car. My muscles felt bound and tight.
My father hesitated, but then nodded. “I understand. Just stay with Tyler, don’t drink too much, and mindlink me if anything goes wrong.”
Tyler and I headed back downstairs, pushing back through the crowd to the bar. Tyler ordered us two pints, and while we waited, I took a moment to look around the room. I spotted an open table in the corner, so I tapped Tyler on the shoulder to let him know where I was going, then scurried over to snag it before anyone else could.
As I sat, I continued looking quietly at the other patrons, just observing. The tavern in Crescent Hollow was usually one of the livelier places in the pack, but never like this. The walls were positively bursting with people, so much so that I could barely even hear the fiddle player in the corner.
