Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 152

Chapter 152

“Kade and Serena really must be going all out for this one,” I thought to Ava.

“Almost feels like they’re compensating for something,” she growled in return.

My jaw clenched at the thought. I didn’t want to consider the what-ifs about the two of them. I shouldn’t have cared whether they truly loved each other or not; I was only here for Ivy. Kade was still the same monster who tormented me for five years, and if he had chosen Serena despite everything, then he was also stupid. Hardly worth thinking about.

“Just… remember what we talked about,” I said.

“I know. I’ll stay hidden, keep our scent muted. He won’t recognize us unless we want him to.”

“Thank you. And… Ava…” I sighed. “I’m sorry you have to go through this again. Having to hide from our mate

“It’s worth it a thousand times over if it keeps you and Ivy alive.”

I couldn’t help but smile faintly at that.

Just then, I noticed two males standing nearby who I vaguely recognized as two Gammas from Kade’s closer circle of allies. I didn’t know their names, but I recognized their faces-both handsome, both wearing Gamma

uniforms.

“-a new heir soon,” one of them was saying while the other nodded along. “About time, too.”

A new heir? Were they referring to Ivy’s competition?

Curious, I leaned closer, keeping my hood up to shadow my face. They didn’t seem to notice me anyway, but still.

“Yeah, well, that sickly little thing was a burden for long enough. He’ll be happier with a real heir. Once their wedding night is over, he won’t even think about that child or her mother ever again…”

My heart lurched. Sickly little burden. Like Ivy’s illness was nothing more than an inconvenience.

And what did they mean, was? Why were they speaking about Ivy as if in the past tense? She wasn’t already, was she?

“Good riddance,” I heard one of the males say then. “Ugly little thing, too-”

gone

I hadn’t meant to, but I had begun to move. I stood so abruptly that my chair scraped loudly against the floor, making both males whip their heads toward me.

“Something wrong, lady?” one of the males asked, narrowing his eyes at me.

“Yeah, actually. I—”

Just then, Tyler stepped into view, holding two pints. He abruptly shoved one into my hand, sending beer sloshing across my cloak, and turned toward the males, grinning. “Don’t mind my sister, gentlemen. She’s had too much to drink already.”

The Gammas blinked at us with suspicion, but Tyler grabbed my arm with his free hand and pulled me away

before anything else could happen. By the time we slipped into the crowd, I could hear the males laughing, probably thinking that I was an unruly female who had no tolerance for alcohol.

“What the hell was that, Elena?” Tyler hissed, his grip tightening around my wrist. “You could have gotten us caught, and we only just got here.”

I glanced over my shoulder. I couldn’t see the men anymore through the dense crowd. “They were talking about Ivy,” I whispered. “They called her a sickly little burden, and ugly. And they were talking about her in the past tense as if she’s already-”

“She’s still alive.” Tyler’s face softened. “Look, I know it’s hard, but you have to keep your cool. We’ll find her. I promise.”

I wanted to believe him. I really did.

I had to.

Finally, I nodded.
