“I’m not.” Serena tilted her head to look up at him. “She was sick, and the treatments weren’t working anyway. It was costing Kade a lot of effort and money to keep her alive, so he opted to end the treatments and let her die.”
I felt like I was going to be sick. Bile rose in my throat, but I swallowed it down. No. I refused to believe it yet. Serena was a liar-always had been, and always would be. I wouldn’t take her words at face value.
“Prove it,” I demanded.
Serena sighed. “I figured you wouldn’t believe me. Very well. Follow me.” She turned toward the Alpha House, which was just a short walk away. My father, brother and I didn’t move just yet.
“I’m not going to trap you,” she called over her shoulder. “Follow or don’t; see if I care. But if you want proof that your baby is dead, this is the only way you’ll get it.”
I exchanged looks with Tyler and our father, feeling the shared uncertainty rippling through the bond we shared. Finally, however, my need to know won out and I shoved past them, jogging after Serena across the lawn. They followed closely behind, refusing to let me out of their sight.
The house was quiet when we entered through the back door, but I hesitated in the doorway, looking around suspiciously.
“Kade isn’t here,” Serena said. “He’s off getting some last-minute alterations done on his suit. All the trouble you caused made him lose some weight.”
