Chapter 159

Elena’s POV

My car rumbled along the bumpy forest road leading to Nightshade territory. The closer the familiar, moss- covered walls of the pack came, the more my smile stretched across my weary face.

“Home at last,” I muttered as I drove through the gates, waving at the guards on duty. I rolled down my window and stuck my head out, deeply inhaling the scent of pine and earth.

It had been one full year since I’d set foot in Nightshade, and seven years since I left Crescent Hollow for good. Samson’s agents confirmed that Ivy was indeed gone, and after that, I never spoke to Kade, never saw him again, and always blocked out any news from his pack. I never stopped hating him, either.

Instead, I immediately took Jayne up on her offer and became her apprentice. And as it turned out, becoming a healer had truly been my calling. I found a true purpose in life for the first time, speeding through my apprenticeship with flying colors, and eventually graduated from the program to become a traveling healer for rogues.

Yes, that’s right: rogues.

It was dangerous for the first few months, traveling through the forests in search of those in need, but eventually, news of my healing prowess began to spread. By now, I could travel easily, for the most part. Most rogues smiled when they saw me; they called me ‘Silver One’ and protected me from the dangers of the forests. I liked that life. I enjoyed traveling, enjoyed living in the forest, enjoyed helping those who needed it the most- it was my destiny, the entire reason why the Moon Goddess had sent me back all those years ago.

But as I pulled into Nightshade for the first time in a year, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of peace upon returning home.

Finally, I was pulled from my thoughts as the familiar Alpha House of Nightshade pack came into view. I’d hardly had a chance to put Tyler’s old truck in park before Lana flung my door open and practically dragged me out of the car.

“Elena!” she cried out, wrapping me in a bone-crushing hug. She’d grown bigger and more muscular over the years, like a true she-warrior in the making. “You’re back! I’m not letting you leave again!”

“Yeah, I can tell,” I choked out, patting her broad shoulders. “Lana… I can’t… breathe…”

“Oh. Sorry.” Lana grinned and released me, stepping back. You look like shit, by the way. And you haven’t been dyeing your hair.”

“Gee. Thanks,” I snorted as I grabbed my bag from the car and pushed my golden braid over my shoulder. Only the bottom six inches were silver now, faded and dull; the rest had grown out in my natural color. “Hair dye isn’t exactly abundant in the forest.”

“This look actually suits you,” Lana said. “Not just the hair, but… everything. Your eyes are bright, and your skin is glowing. You finally seem happy.”

“I am.” I smiled. It had been a hard seven years after everything that happened, but once I found my calling, everything changed. “But I’m happy to be home, too.”

And it was true; it was nearly Tyler’s twenty-fifth birthday, which meant that he would become the new Alpha of Nightshade tomorrow. Our father would finally retire, and Tyler would lead the pack into a new era.

“After all,” I said, “as Tyler’s older sister, how could I miss his birthday?”

Lana grinned. “He hasn’t shut the fuck up about you in at least three days now. In fact, I practically had to fight him off to get to you first. Look, there he is now.”

She gestured ahead, and I looked up to see Tyler himself standing on the porch with a radiant smile.

Only a year had passed since I’d last seen him, but he looked older and more handsome already. He’d grown a short, well-maintained beard that made him appear like a younger version of our father, his golden hair perfectly swept to one side.

He looked the perfect picture of a future Alpha, but he still had that kind, sweet look about him-the same look I’d grown to love and draw comfort from during my darkest moments.
