Chapter 160
I dropped my bag and rushed forward, throwing myself into my brother’s arms.
“Tyler,” I murmured into his chest, “I missed you.”
He rested his chin on top of my head. “I missed you too, sister.”
We held each other for a long moment, just savoring each other’s comfort.
“Alright, alright. That’s enough, you two,” Lana teased. “You’re gonna make me gag.”
“Twenty-six, and still can’t handle public displays of familial affection, Lana?” Tyler smirked as he pulled back, ruffling my hair-he might be younger than me, but he was at least three heads taller, and he often saw me as his little sister rather than the other way around.
“No. I just want her all to myself,” Lana retorted.
I rolled my eyes and took my bag from Lana’s outstretched hand. “There’s plenty of me to go around, you two.”
“Is there?” Tyler tilted his head. “You look good, Ellie. But you look a little thinner.”
“That’s just because I haven’t been feasting every night like you and Father.” I poked his belly, not that there was much there to poke, although he’d definitely been eating more and working out. “Don’t worry, though. I’ll fatten myself up plenty while I’m here.”
“And just how long will you be staying?”
I turned at the sound of that all-too-familiar voice and suppressed a sigh. Natasha. She’d never stopped hating me over the years; in fact, she still barely tolerated me most times, even though I rarely saw her.
Even before I left for my travels, I spent most of my time studying. And when I wasn’t doing that, I was usually training with the Gammas, or spending time with Lana and Tyler. And somehow, Natasha still acted like the half -hour I’d have to spend with her once a night for family dinner was the worst half-hour of her day.
But I forced a smile, just as I did every time I saw her, and said, “Just long enough for the ceremony. I’ve got to get back on the road after that.”
“Good.”
With that, Natasha turned on her heel and strode back inside the house. Tyler, Lana and I exchanged looks, but none of us bothered commenting on it. I’d grown used to Natasha’s not-so-quiet hatred over the years.
With that, we followed Natasha inside, where I immediately spotted my father. “Elena! My silver flower! You made it! I was worried you might crash your car during that storm last night.”
I laughed and stepped into his embrace. “It wasn’t so bad. Just a little rain.” I pulled back and reached into my bag. “I brought everyone gifts.”
Everyone except for Natasha crowded around while I pulled out the souvenirs I’d picked up during my travels; a new reading glasses case for my father, a calfskin journal for Tyler, a pair of training gloves for Lana and some knick-knacks for her parents.
“And this is for you,” I said, handing Natasha a small box.

Natasha eyed the box warily for a moment before gingerly taking it and opening it. Her eyebrows lifted as she held up the dainty silver necklace that was nestled within. She grimaced and looked at me. “Where did you get this?”
“From a rogue trader,” I replied.
She scoffed and handed it back. “Likely stolen. I don’t want it.”
I frowned as I took the box. “It was actually handcrafted by the trader himself. He made really beautiful jewelry.”
“Even so, I don’t want to touch anything that was once in a rogue’s hands.”
I bristled at that. “Rogues are just regular people, you know. Not diseased monsters.”
Natasha didn’t deign to respond to that.
“I’m exhausted,” I said, turning to my father. “I hope you don’t mind if I save the rest of the reunion for
dinner.”
“Of course, of course.” My father nodded. “Oh, but Elena-”
I stopped with one foot on the bottom step. “Yes?”
“With Tyler’s ceremony tomorrow, there will be a lot of people in attendance. We understand if you don’t want to go…
