Chapter 167
Elena’s POV
I entered the banquet hall just as the party began.
The grand hall had been completely transformed since the last time I’d seen it; long tables, lined with a decadent array of food and drinks, ringed the edges of the room. The rafters were festooned with elegant draperies and dangling streamers. The chandeliers glittered brightly, and the air smelled of expensive perfume, mouth-watering smoked meats, and the musk of bodies clad in elegant evening wear strutting around the room.
I paused in the entryway, turning slowly to take it all in. As I did, an Omega approached me with a tray of champagne.
“Would you like a drink, Elena?”
“Yes, please.” I took one of the flutes of bubbling champagne off of the stay and took a sip, feeling the carbonation tickle my nose.
I didn’t drink often these days as good alcohol was typically hard to come by in the wilds-elderberry moonshine really wasn’t as tasty as the rogues claimed-and I needed to keep my head clear for my work, but right now, I felt like I needed something to soothe my frazzled nerves.
Really, it was a splendid party. But I felt out of place tonight.
My tolerance for such events had already been low before, but after spending a year in the wilds where opulent galas and balls were completely unheard of, it was even worse now. I felt my cheeks heating already, heart pounding.
Ever since Ivy died, I just… couldn’t bring myself to attend such events. It was as if each event like this was just a bitter reminder of what I had briefly had and lost, and which my daughter could never experience.
She would never get to put on beautiful dresses and dance at parties. She would never drink and eat and laugh under the glittering chandeliers. She would never listen to music, and—
“Ellie.”
I felt a hand on my arm and looked up to see Tyler standing there, his brows pinched with worry. I hadn’t realized it, but I had begun moving toward the exit as if to leave before I had even fully entered the room.
His presence, though, instantly soothed me. I forced a watery smile and took another sip of my champagne.
“You look very handsome tonight, Mr. Alpha,” I teased softly. He really did look good-every inch the Alpha-to- be in his perfectly-tailored black tuxedo, golden hair neatly swept back.
“You look worried,” he said in response.
My chest tightened. “It’s… been a long time since I’ve attended a party like this. You know that.”
“Well, lucky for you, you’ll be staying by my side tonight,” he whispered in my ear, hooking his arm through mine. “I won’t let you get anxious.”
I glanced at him. “I thought you might have a date tonight, Mr. Alpha.”

Tyler grinned. “And risk letting my favorite sister have a meltdown on the most important day of my life?”
I slapped his arm. “You’ve gotten full of yourself this past year. I never had meltdowns. In fact, you’re the one who got too drunk on numerous occasions and Lana and I had to practically scrape you up off the floor.”
Tyler didn’t have a come-back for that, although with all the people coming up and congratulating him, it wasn’t as if he had a chance to talk.
