Chapter 17

Samantha’s POV

My heart was beating so hard I thought it might pound clean out of my chest.

“Luna,” Amelia blurted out, stepping between me and Natasha, “What are you—”

“Stay out of this, Gamma.” Natasha’s voice was as cold as ice. She snapped her fingers at Melvin and a few other Gammas. “Escort Elena to the Alpha House. Tyler. Samson. I want you to come as well.”

Tyler and his father both looked to be in shock, but didn’t argue as Melvin and his cohorts took me to the Alpha House–the beautiful home that stood at the center of the compound, where only the Alpha’s family lived.

I swallowed hard as the house came into view. I’d lived in Crescent Hollow long enough to know that no Omega- or slave, in my case–ever got called to the Alpha’s home for a good reason.

And if Natasha knew about my past… Then she certainly intended to punish me.

The Alpha House was warm and cozy inside, furnished lavishly with plush seating and golden chandeliers: I found myself standing in the middle of a sitting room with a crackling fire, although I only felt cold.

Natasha was pointing at me with a trembling finger.

“I just attended the funeral of the Stoneridge girl,” she was saying to Alpha Samson, whose face had gone pale by now. “The picture of that girl looked exactly like ‘Elena‘, and Alpha Kade was there.”

My throat bobbed. Kade attended my funeral? For what reason?

“He told me something interesting,” Natasha went on. “That girl was his slave–and his mortal enemy. I was confused at first, but then I recalled the incident where Kade’s parents were killed and his sister was brutally attacked. Turns out your precious ‘Elena‘ was behind all of it!”

The air in the room was thick enough to choke on. I wanted to explain myself, but the words wouldn’t come. Because I knew that they wouldn’t believe me. No one ever did. Maybe Tyler and Samson had been understanding before, but now that they had heard of the crime my sister had committed?

They’d do exactly what everyone else did and accuse me of all of it.

“I told you she was only going to bring trouble to Nightshade,” Natasha snarled, whirling toward me with fire in her eyes. “Kade is a brutal and war–hungry Alpha with only vengeance in his heart. If he discovers that we’ve been harboring the girl who ruined his family, he’ll destroy us.”

I remained silent, waiting for my punishment. But then Samson cleared his throat.

“Darling, the Stoneridge girl is dead and buried. From what I hear, she died right in front of her own mother. So how is it possible that you’re saying she’s standing right here?”

Natasha’s face blanched. “Well… I… I don’t know!” she cried, throwing her hands up in the air. “Maybe she had a lookalike killed in her place! Or perhaps she came back from the dead!”

“Came back from the dead.” Samson pressed his mouth into a thin line, brow furrowing with concern. “Natasha… Darling…”

“Don’t ‘darling‘ me!” Natasha hissed. She swatted away Samson’s hand as he tried to reach for her. “I swear, it’s her! She has you bewitched! Samantha, tell them the truth!”

The Alpha turned to look at me with an apology in his eyes. Little did any of them know that Natasha was right—
