Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 170

Chapter 170

Serena huffed. “Do I at least get a kiss?”

Kade hesitated by the door, but only for a moment. He didn’t respond, didn’t kiss her-simply strode out and left her standing there.

“Well, the Thornhills do know how to throw a party,” Ajax said, leaning his elbows against the bar as he and Kade looked out over the crowd. “I’ll give them that.”

Kade nodded once, but his mind wasn’t on food or drinks or opulent decorations. His eyes were constantly scanning the crowd, searching for the healer known as Silver One.

“There are too many people here to tell,” Kade muttered through clenched teeth. “This feels like a waste.”

“I’ll ask around.” Ajax pushed away from the bar and began moving through the crowd. “You stay here. I’ll be

back.”

Kade watched his Beta go and knocked back the rest of his drink before ordering another. He had to keep a low profile tonight-he had slipped into the party with a large group, avoiding being seen since he hadn’t RSVP’d and didn’t want any trouble-so Ajax had to do the dirty work.

While Kade waited, he continued looking around the room. Amongst the sea of finely dressed guests, he spotted a few familiar faces; dignitaries of various packs, socialites, even the Alpha who Ivy had unceremoniously… inconvenienced the other day.

But no healer.

And no Elena.

Kade wasn’t looking for her. Not really. But his eyes couldn’t help but search for a familiar head of chin-length silver hair. And despite his reservations, he also couldn’t help but feel a small pang of disappointment in his chest.

Seven years. It had been seven years since Kade last saw his second chance mate. Ever since she had left Crescent Hollow, she hadn’t returned, hadn’t called, hadn’t sent a letter. It was for the best, of course; she had tried to hurt his daughter, and Kade hated her for that.

And yet there was a small part of him, the part that was still tied to her, that almost hoped to see her tonight. Just once. Just a glimpse.

It was then that he spotted Tyler Thornhill, the new Alpha of Nightshade; he couldn’t be missed, not with his crown of thorns and flowers. He was standing by the dais, receiving handshakes and gifts and well wishes from the guests.

Beside him stood a woman whose face Kade couldn’t make out, what with her back turned to him. She wore a sky blue dress with gold embroidery, and had long, golden hair that seemed to turn a muddy gray at the ends.

Judging from the way she was hanging onto Tyler’s arm and hugging him, Kade suspected that she was his future Luna.

But Kade wasn’t here to speculate on romance and gossip. Suddenly, his Beta mindlinked him, “Kade, I think the healer is here after all.”

Kade abruptly turned to see Ajax in the crowd. A man was standing beside him and pointing at the woman in the sky blue dress, who was now arm-in-arm with Tyler, heading toward the dance floor.

“Are you sure?” Kade asked, confused. “Isn’t that Tyler’s mate?”

“This guy just says that’s the healer.”

“Hm. They must be an item, then.” So that was why she was here tonight. Kade clenched his jaw, considering his options. He didn’t want to walk directly up to Tyler for fear of starting an altercation, so he lingered by the bar, hoping to find a moment to approach the healer while she wasn’t near Tyler.

Kade hadn’t been waiting for long before the lights suddenly went out.

The room fell silent and the musicians stopped playing. A few gasps and murmurs rippled through the crowd. “Sorry, folks!” a voice boomed. “Everyone stay put while we get the lights back on!”

There was some shuffling, more murmuring, and then, a few minutes later, the lights flickered back to life. The crowd cheered, the band began playing again, and the guests continued to move around the room.

Kade looked around the room, searching for the woman in the blue dress. He spotted Tyler’s crown on the dance floor, and assumed she was still with him.

But then, Kade saw a flash of blue out of the corner of his eye. He turned just as a blue dress and gray-tipped hair slipped through a side door. Tyler’s mate must have snuck out while the lights were off, perhaps to powder her
