Chapter 169
Kade’s POV
“Nightshade pack.” Kade scrubbed his hands over his face. “I haven’t set foot there in years.

“My agents say that the healer was spotted driving that way, Sir,” Ajax said. “Since the young Alpha’s ceremony is in a few days, it’s likely that the renowned healer was invited.”
Kade furrowed his brow. Silver One was allegedly a rogue healer; he wasn’t sure why she would be invited to an Alpha ceremony, but perhaps Ajax was right. He reached into his wallet, pulling out the faded, crumpled. invitation that he had received a few weeks ago. On it was printed elegant, swooping script that read:
“You are cordially invited to Alpha Tyler Thornhill’s Commencement Ceremony.”
He had looked at the invitation for all of one second before he had mindlessly stuffed it into his wallet and promptly forgotten about it. Kade had no intention of attending the ceremony, and besides he was no fool. He knew he was only invited as a formality, and wouldn’t actually be welcome.
But if Silver One was there…
Kade considered his options for a few minutes. He could send Ajax, or another one of his agents, to find and retrieve the healer. It would be easier that way.
And yet, for some reason, Kade felt compelled to go on his own. He wasn’t sure why, but he just had this sensation in his chest-as if something were pulling him, and only him, toward the healer. It was the same reason why he had felt compelled to search for her himself over the past several months instead of having someone else do it.
“Alright. I’ll go.”
Kade began preparing for the journey as soon as possible. He dusted off his finest tuxedo, the one he saved for only the most special occasions, and got his hair cut-as of late, what with all the traveling to search for Silver One, his dark strands had grown long and unkempt, and his stubble was rapidly turning into a full-blown beard.
Once the barber was finished, Kade turned to the mirror, inspecting his work. The man staring back at him looked older, more tired than ever. Fine lines had formed around his mouth from his lips constantly being set in a hard frown. His eyes looked tired from lack of sleep; how could he sleep, after all, when his dear sister was in such pain?
His eyes flicked to the necklace peeking out of his shirt. He clasped the chain and pulled it out, resting the small pendant in his hand: a lumpy, handmade bead in the attempted shape of a wolf’s claw, painted and ornamented by a child’s fingers.
Ivy had made it for him two years ago, on a whim. She said it was a protection charm, and was very proud of it.
Kade hadn’t taken it off since then.
Just then, a figure appeared in the doorway behind Kade. He quickly stuffed the necklace back into his shirt and looked up to find Serena gliding into the room, hands clasped within the trailing sleeves of her elegant red dress.
“Going somewhere?” she asked, eyeing the suitcase sitting on the bed.

Kade nodded and stood. “I’m going to Tyler Thornhill’s Alpha ceremony.”
Serena’s brows shot skyward. “Nightshade pack? Can I come?”
“No. I’m going alone.”
“I’m your Luna. I should be attending such events with you!” Serena’s voice began to turn shrill, as it often did whenever she was faced with the mildest inconvenience. “Unless you’re going to see her?”
“Who?” Kade asked, busying himself with folding a sweater and tucking it into his suitcase.
Serena planted her hands on her hips. “Don’t play stupid, Kade. You know who. E-le-na.” She spat out each syllable of the name like it tasted foul on her tongue.
Kade suppressed a sigh. Serena often brought up the second chance mate, even now, seven years later. They’d had the same conversation over and over; Serena always seemed to think that Kade was still in love with her. As if he had time to have a mistress, anyway.
