I lunged for one, but two others easily pinned me to the ground. No matter how hard I struggled, it was useless; they were too strong, and there were too many others still circling me, cackling deep in their throats like hyenas.

Then, I heard my truck’s engine rev. I jerked my head up just in time to see it speeding away-only then did the others release me and chase after the truck, howls echoing in the afternoon air.

I scrambled to my feet and gave chase, but I couldn’t keep up with the speed of the vehicle. Soon, I lost sight of them entirely and skidded to a halt in the middle of the road, panting.

“Shit,” I cursed as I shifted back, pressing my hands into my knees. “They stole my fucking car!”

My voice echoed in the quiet forest. The last thing I heard was my truck’s engine revving in the distance, and some more howls, and then utter silence. They were gone.

Cursing again, I turned around, looking down the road in both directions. Even in wolf form, it would take me hours to reach Nightshade; it was better to continue toward Crescent Hollow, which was still only a couple of miles away.

By the time I reached the familiar wrought iron gates, my legs were sore and my feet were forming blisters from walking on the road in the wrong shoes. I hesitated once more, looking up at the ominous mountain peak.

Kade, the man who killed my child, was in there somewhere-with Serena, no less.
