So I shoved my hands into my jacket pockets and strode up to the gates, where two guards were on duty. They pointed their spears at me the moment they saw me coming.

“Stay back!” one shouted. “Rogues are not welcome here!”

“I’m not a rogue. I’m Elena, the healer. I need to speak with Alpha Kade.”

The guards exchanged wary looks. For a long moment, I thought they might not believe me; finally, though, they seemed to settle on the fact that I at least didn’t look like a rogue, and made me wait there while they mindlinked Kade.

I must have waited for nearly an hour, pacing back and forth outside the gate. Kade was certainly taking his time for someone who apparently needed desperate help for his sister. But eventually, I spotted a dark form walking down the path from the Alpha House.

However, as the figure came closer, I realized that it wasn’t Kade-it was a woman in an elegant navy blue gown that trailed across the ground behind her as if she didn’t care whether it got dirty.

It was the kind of carelessness that only came from having no shortage of finery. Like a Luna might.

As she came closer, I realized, with a sinking feeling in my chest, that it was Serena.

Goddess, she had hardly aged a day over the past seven years. Her hair was just as perfect as ever, trailing down her back in silky golden waves. Her skin was pale and luminous, and her lips were painted a deep, bloody red.

When she saw me standing there in my jeans and sweater and light jacket, with my braid mussed and my skin streaked with dirt, I could practically feel the judgment radiating off of her. Her lips curved further, revealing a tight sneer.

“Well, well. Look what the cat dragged in.” She came to a stop between the guards and glanced behind me. “You came alone? Without a vehicle?”

I didn’t want to give her the satisfaction of saying that I’d been carjacked, so I simply said, “Kade needs a healer for Debbie. I just so happen to be one.”

Serena’s eyes narrowed. “Likely story.” She turned on her heel and gestured to me flippantly, addressing the guards. “Send her away. She’s just a rogue.”

The guards nodded and moved toward me, spears pointed in my direction. “Hey!” I called out, taking a step back. “You can’t send me away! I’m the one Kade has been seeking out for months!”

Serena hesitated, shoulders tensing. I almost wondered if mentioning that Kade had been searching for me had struck a nerve. But when she looked at me again, her smile was still firmly in place.

“I assure you, my husband was not searching for you. You’re not welcome here, ‘Elena’; not near me, my mate, or my child.”

My child.

The words sent a pang through my chest that was so intense I took another involuntary step back. Kade and Serena were married-mates. That came as no surprise to me.

But finding out that they had truly had a family together, after what happened to Ivy… I should have expected it -I did expect it–but even so, it made my throat constrict painfully.

Kade had killed my daughter… Only to have the heir he always wanted with Serena.

Satisfied by the blow her words had landed, Serena nodded to the guards and glided away. The guards advanced on me, growling low, their spears pointed at my throat.

I held up my hands in begrudging surrender.

“Alright. I’m going.”

Without my truck, it was a long journey back to Nightshade. I moved swiftly in wolf form, only slowing down occasionally to catch my breath, and yet it was still late by the time I arrived and had even begun to rain, soaking straight to the bone.

The guards on duty perked up when they saw me, brows furrowing.

“Elena? You came back?” They opened the gate for me as I shifted and staggered through, legs trembling from running for hours. “Where is your car?”

I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. I was too exhausted, not to mention too choked up on those words that had been echoing in my head on a loop since I’d left Crescent Hollow.
