Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 187

Chapter 187

Elena’s POV

Every muscle in my body was on fire as I pushed myself to my feet. The very effort made my stomach clench and bile rise in my throat again, but I swallowed it down, ignoring the outstretched hand my father extended to help

me up.

As I stood, swaying slightly on my feet, Tyler froze. He was in wolf form, jaws open, and had Kade pinned to the grass. I leveled him with a hard glare, and he shifted.

“Ellie, if he was trying to hurt you…”

“I saw the whole thing!” Natasha, now at Melvin’s side, was helping the Delta to his feet. Blood was running out of his nose from the blow that Kade had landed across the side of his head, and he looked dazed, potentially even mildly concussed.

“Alpha Kade just showed up out of nowhere, running across the lawn like a madman!” Natasha went on. Melvin tried to jump in the way to protect Elena, but Kade attacked him.”

I lifted a brow at that. Out of all of Natasha’s schemes, this was perhaps one of her most poorly planned. Did she really think that I wouldn’t deny her story?

But as I opened my mouth to do it, I found myself hesitating.

Natasha had been one of my biggest tormentors-if not the biggest-for the past seven years. I must have told my father about her abuse over a dozen times; he always stood up for me, always punished her when fitting, but she never truly learned her lesson. The moment the waters cooled, she would simply ease the heat back on and set them boiling again.

I decided, in that moment, to keep this little incident to myself-for the time being. What she and Melvin had done tonight was egregious enough to potentially use to my advantage later.

So for now, I remained silent on the matter. But I turned to Tyler and lifted my chin.

“He wasn’t trying to hurt me.”

Tyler stared at me, still straddling Kade on the lawn. The disbelief in his eyes was palpable.

“Ellie…”

“Release him,” I said firmly. “Please.”

My brother hesitated for a long moment, eyes darting between me and the man he had pinned to the grass, but finally, he released Kade with a shove and stood. Still, as Kade pushed himself to his feet, two guards approached and flanked him.

I looked at Kade again, really looked at him, and noted the desperation in his eyes once more. But this time, there was something else there, too.

Protectiveness.

The sight of it made my breath lodge in my throat. He felt protective over me. So protective, in fact, that he must

have sensed my pain through our bond and had escaped his jail cell and attacked a Delta just to get to me.

Something softened in my chest at the thought, although I tried not to let it. The mate bond did funny things sometimes; it might not have been a conscious decision on his part, and it definitely didn’t mean that he cared about me.

Composing himself, Tyler turned to Kade. “You may be released, but you are not welcome here. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll leave my territory now and never return.”

Kade’s jaw feathered. “Fine. But Elena…” He looked at me. “Debbie really does need your help. Would you consider returning to Crescent Hollow?”

“Return to Crescent Hollow?” my father spat out. “She’ll do no such-”

I held my hand up to stop him. “I’ll consider it.” Both my father and brother whipped their heads toward me in shock, but I held Kade’s gaze. “And what about your wife? She told the guards I was a rogue, didn’t believe that I was a healer, and told me to stay away.”

Something flickered through Kade’s eyes at the mention of Serena, but it was gone before I could make sense of it. “She made a mistake,” he said. “You won’t have to worry about it.”

Right. Like I wouldn’t have to worry about the woman who had tried to kill me seven years ago.

I turned to my family. My father’s face was grave. Tyler looked furious.
