Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 186

Chapter 186

“Not just yet,” Natasha cooed, checking her nails with deliberate calm. “Since she was disrespectful enough to spit up on my shoes, I think more burpees are in order.”

Kade’s POV

I must have been glaring at the cell door for an hour now. They’d put me in a cell. A fucking cell.

My wolf was furious, raging at the inside of my chest like a rabid animal. “Coward,” he snarled. “You let that green Alpha put us here like this-you didn’t even fight back!”

I ignored him. What else was I supposed to do? Debbie needed help. Desperately. And Elena had been willing to give her the help she needed until Serena got involved; I had to prove to her that I needed her, even if it meant letting her boyfriend lock me up like a common criminal.

All night, I’d been calling out to her through the bond we shared, urging her to come here. I just wanted her to hear me out, wanted her to listen to me.

She never replied, which made me feel like even more of a fool. But until Tyler released me and banished me in the morning, I wouldn’t stop.

It was past midnight when I felt it: the sudden tug from her end of the bond. It was so intense and unexpected that it made me jump to my feet, heart suddenly pounding.

But it wasn’t a simple response. It was frantic, desperate. One word: “Help!”

The anguish that washed over me a moment later had me surging forward, gripping the bars of the cell door with both hands. Elena was in trouble; my mate needed me.

Logic told me to stay put, that her new mate would probably handle whatever it was, or that it was even a trick. But my wolf thought otherwise. And tonight…

Tonight, for the first time in seven years, Ghost won out.

I didn’t think. I just moved. My wolf’s strength surged, and I bent the bars of the cell until I could fit through. I’d never done that before-didn’t even know I had it in me. But then again, I’d never had to try before.

“Hey!” a voice shouted as I burst out of the guard’s office. “Get back here!”

I didn’t turn around, didn’t stop. My legs carried me through the quiet streets, toward that feeling of pain and helplessness that was growing stronger with each step. All sense left my mind as I raced toward her, replaced by one thing and one thing only: the overwhelming need to protect my mate.

In the seven years I’d spent married to Serena, I had never felt like this. Serena’s pain, anger, and sadness felt dulled, muted compared to this. This… this was pure instinct, and completely irresistible.

The moment I saw her, sprawled across the lawn with two forms standing over her, I surged forward. The male was nudging his boot against her side and laughing while she coughed and sputtered. The smell of vomit filled my nostrils, mixed with the tang of fresh sweat.

“What are you doing to her?” I snarled.

The male had hardly had a chance to turn around before I pulled my fist back and cracked it across his jaw with a sound that echoed across the lawn. He crumpled, immediately unconscious.

It was only then, when I heard a scream, that I realized that the other figure was the current Luna of this pack; Natasha. The very woman who had lied to me about Elena all those years ago.

I ignored her and crouched down to Elena’s level. She was trembling and covered in sweat, with vomit dribbling down her chin and onto her sweater. When she saw me, her eyes widened-was that fear, shock, or relief that I saw there? Perhaps all three?
