Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 190

Chapter 190

Elena’s POV

When I reached the top of the stairs, a figure appeared in Kade’s bedroom doorway-Serena.

She froze, staring at me for a long, tense moment. She must have known I was coming; although she probably assumed that I would be too much of a coward to show my face.

Well, she was wrong.

“Hello, Serena,” I said coolly.

Her eyes blazed with a fury I knew all too well. “How long are you staying?”

Such a gracious hostess.

“Not long,” I said, brushing past her toward Debbie’s room. “Besides, I have no intention of staying in the house.”

If Serena was relieved by that, I couldn’t tell, nor did I care. I made my way down the hall, spotting the door with the faded flowers painted on the front-they were even more faded now that seven years had passed.

Within the room, I could make out the sound of faint thumps and groans. Kade materialized at my side, placing his hand on the doorknob.

“You might want to brace yourself,” he said quietly. “Her condition is much worse than when you were last here.”

During my travels, I had seen plenty of awful things; I had seen women die during childbirth, children with tumors protruding from their skin, elders who couldn’t even open their eyes long enough to say goodbye to their

loved ones.

But nothing prepared me for what I saw when Kade opened that door.

“Debbie…”

Her name slipped out of my lips like a prayer. The moment I saw her, my heart cracked in two. Debbie, sweet, innocent Debbie, the little girl who had once played and made flower crowns, was a ghost.

The first thing I noticed was the empty room. Everything except for the bed had been removed; the art, the rugs, the furniture, the decor. Even the curtains were gone. The room that had once been a girl’s sanctuary now looked like a prison cell.

Then, I saw the straitjacket. It bound her too-thin arms to her too-thin body, forcing her to roll back and forth across the mattress as she struggled to free herself-to no avail. Her long, dark hair was matted and greasy, and she’d lost so much weight that I could see her bones sticking out.

And even more disturbingly, her nightgown was pushed up around her hips from her thrashing, her eyes were rolled back, and her tongue was sticking out at odd angles as she twisted her head this way and that in unnatural positions. Spittle flew out of her mouth with each gnash of her teeth, and she was muttering in tongues.

I dropped my bag, cautiously approaching the bed. “Debbie?” I called out softly.

If she noticed me, she didn’t indicate it. She just kept twisting around, writhing like something had possessed her, snarling and snapping at the leather straps across her straitjacket.

“Believe it or not,” Kade said from the doorway, “this is actually one of her good days.”

I glanced at him over my shoulder, but he wasn’t looking at me. His eyes were fixed on his sister, and the anguish I saw in those gray depths made my heart fracture just a touch more.

Taking care not to startle her, I perched on the edge of her bed and gently placed my hand on her arm. She still didn’t indicate that she noticed my presence.
