Chapter 191
“What was that?” Serena hissed, quieter now. “A trick!”
“Not a trick.” I didn’t look at Serena as I continued to pour my soothing energy into Debbie’s clammy skin. “I told you I was a healer, but you didn’t believe me.”
I could hear Serena scoff behind me, but I continued to ignore her.
Once Debbie had stopped moving, now resting with her eyes shut, I pulled my hand back. I studied her for a long moment, willing my wolf’s power to seek out the source of her illness so I could cure it, or at least stabilize it.
But I couldn’t locate it. Normally, when I used my ability to diagnose a patient, I would feel a pull toward the source of their illness; there was none with Debbie. No heat. No dark threads tugging me in the direction of her ailment.
She was sick, that much was for certain. And her condition was definitely worsening.
But for the first time since I’d been an apprentice, I genuinely couldn’t tell what was wrong with my patient.
This was very strange; I had diagnosed and healed a myriad of rare and dangerous illnesses just in the past year alone with no problem. What was wrong with Debbie that I couldn’t find the source of her ailment?
However, I did notice that, even after being soothed, Debbie was still half-heartedly pulling at her straitjacket. Turning to Kade, I said, “Are the restraints really necessary?”
Kade paused. “She… Has hurt herself and others in the past. It was a last resort.”
I looked at Debbie again, biting my lower lip. I understood the necessity of such things, but she really looked uncomfortable. “Remove it, please,” I said. “I’ll soothe her in my own way.”
Kade looked uncertain, but after a moment, he relented. He crossed the room and helped me carefully unbuckle the straps, then we removed the jacket entirely. The moment Debbie’s arms were free, she let out a soft sigh of relief, sank back against her pillows, and drifted off to sleep.
Kade blinked at his sister. “Did you… cure her?”
“No. Not by a long shot.” I reached into my medical bag and pulled out my stethoscope. “Normally, I can use my ability to locate the source of an ailment, but hers is a mystery to me at the present moment. I’ll have to run some more tests.”
Serena scoffed. “Just as I thought. She has no ability; just parlor tricks.”
I ignored Serena, sticking my stethoscope in my ears and gently pressing the probe to Debbie’s chest. Her heartbeat was weak but surprisingly steady.
“Does that mean you’ll have to stay?” Kade asked.
“Potentially. Just until I can make a diagnosis.”
“And then what?”
“We’ll have to formulate a treatment plan. I may be able to heal her over time, but it would likely take multiple sessions.”

Kade nodded curtly. “Very well. You’re more than welcome to stay as long as you need.”
“Kade.” Serena straightened. “Can we talk? In private?”
He hesitated once more, but then he turned and followed her out of the room. The moment they were gone, I let out a small, shaky breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding and looped my stethoscope around my neck.
Debbie was still sleeping, but her head was turning to the right and left in her sleep. She continued to faintly gnash her teeth, and her fingers were twitching at strange angles.
My chest ached for her. I gently placed my hand over hers, although she showed no indication of feeling my touch.
“I’m going to help you, Debbie,” I whispered. “No matter what it takes, I promise that you won’t have to suffer forever.”
Just then, I heard the sound of the door creaking open. I expected it to be Kade returning, so I didn’t look up as I rifled through my pack for my thermometer. However, the sound of small feet pattering across the floorboards made me freeze, and before I could look up, little arms had been thrown around my neck.
