Chapter 200

Elena’s POV

Alpha Mason of Embergrove pack.

I realized now, with a start, that I had seen him before-in Alpha Weekly, a cheap magazine I’d picked up once on the road when I needed something to read while I ate my cheap to-go dinner.

At the time, I hadn’t paid much attention, but I recalled now that he had been named Alpha Weekly’s “Alpha of the year” not only due to his good looks, but also his successful pack, great wealth, and philanthropic endeavors.

I never thought I would meet him in person. I especially never thought I would wear a gown that he purchased for me.

Mason’s palm was warm and sure around mine. When I shook it, he lifted my hand and pressed his lips to my knuckles, brown eyes never leaving mine. I must have looked like a mess, gawking at him with my mouth hanging open.

Finally, he released me. I recollected myself and held up the bag containing the dress. “You paid for my gown?” I

asked.

He nodded. “I did.”

I immediately pulled out my wallet and began rifling through it for whatever cash I had, which, admittedly, wasn’t much at the moment. “It’s way too expensive. I can’t repay you all at once, but would you be willing to do installments?”

“That won’t be necessary.” Mason held up his hand, refusing the wad of cash I tried to give him. His lips curved into a smile that somehow made him look even more drop-dead gorgeous. “All I ask in return is for the opportunity to see you wearing it at the ball.”

I didn’t know what to say to that. I’d never met this man before, and yet he was doting on me like a potential match. Curious, I glanced at my father to see if he knew anything about this, but he looked just as dumbfounded as I felt.

“Well, um… Thank you,” I said. My voice was too small for my liking. It was rare for me to get this flustered these days, but here I was, stammering in front of a man simply because he was handsome and had bought me a

nice dress.

Mason nodded, still smiling that perfect fucking smile, then turned to my father and bowed his head respectfully. “I should take my leave. I’m hoping to visit the other packs in the region today to collect RSVPs.”

My father grinned and guided Mason to the door, leaving me momentarily while he saw him out. I was too stunned to say goodbye-I just stood there, still holding the bag, until my father returned.

“What’s this about a dress?” my father asked.

I held up the gown. “Mason ran into me at the shop. He paid for my dress without my knowledge and left. I thought I’d never see him again.”

“It’s exquisite!” my father exclaimed, running his hands over the gown. “Alpha Mason has good taste.” He glanced at me with a devilish gleam in his eye. “And it seems he has more than just a taste for finery, too.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, although I had a feeling I already knew the answer.

My father smirked. “Oh, Elena, don’t act like you didn’t feel the chemistry between you two. I thought I might get burned by the sparks that flew when he kissed your hand!”

“Sparks?” I stuffed the gown back into the bag. “He was a nice man, but I didn’t sense any chemistry.”

“Nonsense. You’re blushing even now.”

I quickly looked away, as if that would somehow hide the red flush to my cheeks. “I’m just not used to that kind of attention, that’s all.”
