Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 203

Chapter 203

Elena’s POV

“How long have you been standing there?” I blurted out.

The words slipped out of my mouth before I could stop them. I instantly regretted them, fearing I sounded too suspicious. To my relief, Kade simply blinked at me in confusion, then said slowly, “I don’t know. A few seconds?”

“Oh.” I quickly composed myself. He hadn’t been there when Debbie said my birth name. That was a good thing; until she was healed, if she could even be healed at all, I couldn’t risk the truth coming out. Kade would definitely misunderstand and convict me of crimes I never committed once more.

Kade took a step back, putting some much-needed distance between us. I felt like I could breathe again, although my wolf whined softly at the sudden space.

“Any new findings?” he asked, looking over my shoulder toward his sister’s bed.

Nodding, I dug into my bag to pull out the plant dictionary. I opened it to the dog-eared page and handed it to him. His brows lifted as he read the entry on Luna’s Bane.

“You think she was poisoned?” he asked.

“I’m not sure.” I placed my stethoscope in my ears and listened to her heart rate. Everything seemed normal, at least for the moment. I started taking her pulse next. “But it’s a start. I was reading about a case study with similar symptoms and thought I should look into it.”

“I wonder how she would have gotten poisoned,” he muttered.

“Could have been an accident.” I thought back to that day all those years ago; was it possible that Debbie had eaten the berries while out in the woods with Serena? Or had the rogues dosed her with the poison so they could assault her more easily? I hoped it wasn’t either of those, and that it was something else entirely.

“It says here that it’s incurable,” Kade pointed out.

“It says that there are no known cures.” I released Debbie’s too-thin wrist and held up my hands. “Besides, if I can pinpoint the source of the illness, I might be able to use my wolf’s ability to cure her. The textbooks tend to leave that possibility out.”

“You seem quite sure of yourself.”

“I have hope, that’s all.” I reached into my bag and pulled out my blood draw kit. “For now, I’m going to run a blood test and see what I can find. If there are traces of the poison in her blood, we’ll know that that was likely the cause. All it would have taken was a single dose years ago for her condition to get to this point.” I glanced up at him. “Would you mind holding her down, just in case she wakes up?”

Kade nodded and took off his jacket, revealing a sweater that was slightly worn around the cuffs. I tried not to stare as he pushed up his sleeves, revealing tanned forearms, and focused instead on the task at hand.

“So,” Kade said, gently holding Debbie’s shoulders as I wiped her inner arm with an antiseptic wipe, “if you diagnose Debbie, you’ll be able to cure her using your ability? All it takes is you knowing what the illness is?”

“Well… Sort of like that,” I replied. “It makes it easier to channel my energy when I know the source of the illness. Usually I can just sense it, but not always.”

“I thought your wolf is Silver. Shouldn’t this be innate for you?”

I snorted at that. “Not necessarily. I’m still honing my ability, as well as my knowledge in healing; there are times, however rare, when I don’t know what I’m working with. There are also times when I need to resort to typical healing methods.”

“And what would a ‘typical healing method’ entail in this case, if the book says there are no known cures?”
