Chapter 204
“As long as there’s even a tiny chance at helping my sister, I’m open to anything.”
Kade’s genuine response took me by surprise. I glanced up at him through my brow and saw the concern etched into his features as he looked down at Debbie, and felt myself soften slightly.
“Rest assured that I’m going to do everything I can to help her,” I murmured. Without thinking, I reached out and placed my hand on his arm. “Regardless of what the textbooks say is possible or not.”
He snapped his gaze up to meet mine. I felt his muscles tense under my hand, but he didn’t pull away- although he did clear his throat, subtly reminding me of the task. I blushed faintly and returned to my work.
Neither of us spoke for the rest of the blood draw. I took a few vials, then carefully cleaned everything up and wrapped Debbie’s arm with gauze and tape. I soothed her again with my wolf’s power, then gave her a dose of the tincture under her tongue.
“Make sure she rests for the remainder of the evening,” I said, rising. “I’ll go back to my room at the inn and run the test. I’ll get back to you in the morning with the results. Hopefully we have some useful findings.”
I left after that. Kade remained sitting beside Debbie, and the last I saw of him was his head bent over her bed, his elbows braced on his knees and his hands clasped around one of hers. The sight made something tender form in my heart, something that I couldn’t quite chase away.
However, the feeling quickly faded when I passed through the foyer on my way out and stepped on something small and woolen. I lifted my boot and looked down to see a little yellow mitten sitting on the floor.
A pang hit me square in the chest when I picked it up, and whatever tender feelings I’d briefly harbored for Kade instantly dissipated.
In my mind, I saw an image of the happy little family that he’d created in the wake of my daughter’s death. I saw the blue eyes and dark hair of a child who resembled my own, who even shared her name but wasn’t her. And behind her, I saw Kade and Serena looming like shadows, darkening everything they touched.
No matter what version of Kade I saw during those moments in Debbie’s room, I had to remind myself that this was what he really was. A monster who let my child die. Who stole her name to give to a replacement.
And even if I did cure Debbie, and she exonerated me, I could never forget this. Once that was over, I would not return to Crescent Hollow where the ghosts of my past lived. No amount of vindication could ever change that.
I met Tyler outside, and we headed to the inn. The innkeeper seemed surprised to see us again, but didn’t comment on our return. While we waited for the room to be prepared, we ordered dinner and found a spot at an empty table to eat.
I was taking my coat off when I stuck my hand into my pocket, searching for my chapstick, and felt it. The mitten. Baffled, I pulled it out and studied it. I hadn’t recalled pocketing it, but then again, my mind had been elsewhere when I’d left the house and I must have done it without thinking.
Tyler leaned forward, noticing the yellow mitten right away. “What’s that?”

“Or to get away from each other.” Tyler wiggled his eyebrows at me. “Trouble in paradise, perhaps?”
The vindictive, bitter part of me, the same part that had called Ivy’s mitten a rag, wanted to agree with Tyler. I wanted to create an image in my mind of an unhappy couple who fought and bickered and didn’t share a bed because they were secretly so miserable together.
