Chapter 206

I heated the various herbs necessary to run the test over a bunsen burner and mixed them until they formed a clear solution, then carefully placed the solution onto a strip of testing paper and inserted it into one of the vials of blood. On the side, I also prepared various other tests, including a petri dish to test for a bacterial infection.

It took about thirty minutes for the solution on the test strip to change color-from clear to deep blue. After cross-referencing the results with the information in my books and checking the sample under a microscope, I was finally able to confirm it.

“Aha!” I cried out, jolting Tyler out of sleep-it was past midnight by now.

Tyler sat up, rubbing his eyes. “What is it?” he slurred. “You hurt yourself?”

“No. Not at all!” I rushed over, jumping onto his bed, and grabbed my brother’s shoulders. “My hunch was right, Tyler! She’s got Luna’s Bane in her blood! Well, trace amounts. Very small. So small I almost missed it. But it’s there.”

“And this is… a good thing?”

“Well, no, but it’s a start. I can diagnose her now, which means that I might be able to help her.”

Tyler blinked, clearing the sleep from his vision. I jumped off his bed and rushed over to the desk, where I began writing furiously in my notebook.

“So what do you do now?” he asked.

“Now, I return to the house and see if I can focus my ability on her blood.”

“And if that doesn’t work?”

“I’m thinking… Dialysis to start, probably. Peritoneal, of course. Oh, and there are some experimental medicines I’d like to order. I’m sure Kade won’t mind paying for them, but they are quite pricey…”

By the time I was finished writing and muttering to myself like a madwoman, Tyler had fallen back asleep, laying on his back with his mouth wide open.

As for me, I hardly slept that night-I was too excited to rest. It wasn’t until around two in the morning that I finally passed out on the bed with my head laying on an open book, my fingers stained with ink and my tongue lingering with the taste of Jayne’s tea.

That night, I dreamt of curing Debbie-of bringing back the spirit of the innocent little girl who had had everything stolen from her. I saw her skin come back to life, her face turn plump and smiling. I saw her bedroom brightly lit with sunshine and fresh flowers painted on her door by her own hand.

And in those dreams, I saw Kade approaching me, wrapping his arms around me, dipping his head and whispering the words:

“Samantha, I’m so sorry…”

I woke just as his lips met mine. The sun was already up, and my cheeks were flushed from the memory of the dream. But it was just that-a dream. I tried not to dwell on it, and instead focused on relaying the news.
