Chapter 207
Serena’s POV
“Grandma!”
The moment they stepped out of the car, Ivy threw her arms wide and took off running toward the front door, practically bowling Margaret over in her excitement. Margaret grinned and scooped the little girl up, peppering kisses all over her face.
“Hello, little one. Did you miss me?”
“Mhm!” Ivy screeched. “So much happened this week!”
Margaret beamed, propping the child against her hip as she opened the front doro and strode inside. Serena rolled her eyes as the door nearly slammed into her face. “Hello to you too, Mother,” Serena muttered, not that Margaret heard her.
Margaret was too busy doting on the fucking brat.
“Were you a good girl this week?” Margaret asked, carrying Ivy into the kitchen.
Jack, sitting at the kitchen table with a newspaper in his lap, scoffed. “Good?” he repeated. “The girl doesn’t know the meaning of the word.”
Well, at least someone agreed with Serena.
Ivy stuck her tongue out at Jack over her grandmother’s shoulder. If Margaret noticed, then she chose to ignore it, too busy chattering to the child and giving her cookies that she didn’t deserve. Serena’s mother always doted on the little brat, and Serena didn’t understand why.
The child was willful and stubborn, just like her mother had been at that age. She was too wild, more like a little boy than a girl-the last time Serena tried putting her in a pretty dress for once instead of those awful overalls, Ivy had thrown a temper tantrum loud enough to shatter glass-and refused to eat any decent foods.
And yet, somehow, Serena’s mother thought she was the best kid in the entire world. Every weekend, when Serena brought Ivy home to visit her grandparents, Margaret would dote on her and give her whatever she wanted and spoil her more than she had already been spoiled by her father.
Serena just couldn’t understand what her mother saw in her.
“Serena.” Jack stood, setting aside his newspaper. “Come with me.”
She knew what this was about, and dreaded the conversation they were about to have, but followed her stepfather out of the room anyway. The moment they were alone, he turned on her.
“Well? Any progress?” He glanced at her belly. “Are you pregnant yet, or are you still playing ‘Mommy’ for the child of a slave?”
Serena’s jaw clenched. She had never wanted to act as Ivy’s mother. She had only put up with it because her initial plans to poison her as an infant had failed, and Kade adored the brat too much for Serena to get away with anything else.

But no matter how much she wanted to give her stepfather good news, Serena wasn’t pregnant. How could she get pregnant when the only time she and Kade had even had sex was on their wedding night seven years ago?
That night, Kade hadn’t even finished. He had stopped halfway through after not being able to get hard, claiming that he wasn’t ready. He slept in his study that night, leaving Serena alone and in tears.
Even now, after seven years of trying to get close to him, Kade still hadn’t treated Serena like a wife he loved. On the rare occasion they shared a bed, he would wait until Serena was already asleep and would get up before she
woke.
Usually, he just slept in a spare room or his study.
And he only pretended to be a good husband in public. The rest of the time, he treated her as nothing more than a housemate. He never even marked her.
“No,” Serena admitted, touching her belly. “I’m not… We haven’t…”
Jack’s brows lowered. “I heard there’s another woman coming around now. His second chance mate—the one that looks like Samantha.” He took a step closer. “Stop dragging your feet, Serena. Unless you want to be replaced.”
Serena hadn’t told her parents who “Elena” truly was, and she never intended to. She intended for Samantha to die seven years ago with a knife in her chest, but had failed, just as she had failed to kill Ivy.
