Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 209

Chapter 209

Elena’s POV

Debbie was laying in her bed, just as she always was. Nothing had changed in that regard.

Kade opened the door and stepped aside to let me into the room. His expression was still grim, but there was a thread of hope in his eyes now that I had shown him the results. I hated the thought of potentially disappointing him almost as much as I hated the idea that, even now, I still might not be able to cure Debbie.

“Her symptoms got a little worse overnight,” he said quietly as I walked up to her bed. She was sweating profusely, her nightgown clinging to her skin, and her eyes were rolling around in their sockets. When I reached out to touch her, she gnashed her teeth at me and made a strange hissing sound.

“I can see that.” I carefully sat on the edge of her bed. “Debbie, I’m here to help you. You don’t have to be afraid, okay? I’m just going to put my hand on you.”

If she understood me, she gave no indication. Just kept twisting her head back and forth and writhing on the bed, muttering gibberish under her breath.

“So, now that you know the source of her illness, can you cure her?” Kade asked. “With your… ability?”

“Potentially, but it’s not guaranteed.” I placed my hand on her forehead despite her attempts to move away. I’m going to try my best.”

To his credit, Kade was silent while I worked. I willed my energy into my palm-not the soothing blue energy, but rather the power that came from the deepest recesses of the well within me.

I imagined yellow light spilling out of my hand and into Debbie’s mind, like a warm embrace wrapping around the source of her sickness. It was how I had cured many illnesses before, and it became easier to harness with each one.

But then I felt it. The block that I felt sometimes when my ability simply wasn’t honed enough to manage a particularly rare or difficult illness. It was always a disappointing feeling. I had expected it to happen this time, but it still made my jaw clench.

No matter how hard I tried to slip my power into Debbie’s mind, it fell flat. As if her mind darkened the power, blotting out the golden light before it could take root. Like her head was full of shadows.

After several minutes of trying to no avail, I sighed, shook my head, and pulled my hand back.

“I knew it wouldn’t be that simple,” I whispered.

“So what happens now?” Kade took a step forward, his face drawn with concern as I used my blue energy to soothe Debbie. At least I could ease her symptoms for now.

“I’ll have to come up with a treatment plan.” I stood, pulling a fresh vial of the tincture out of my bag. “I’ll return next weekend with one. In the meantime, I’m going to consult with my mentor and do some research. This neurotoxin has no known cure, but we’ll figure something out.”

Kade’s jaw ticked. “I had hoped you would find a solution by now.”

“So had I.” My shoulders slumped. “I’m sorry. I know it’s taking a lot longer than anticipated. If you would

rather find another healer, I understand.”

“No.” Kade’s voice was surprisingly firm, making me blink. He looked at his sister and sighed. “It’s not your fault. She’s been like this for twelve years. I’m sure a few more weeks won’t make a difference at this point.”
