Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 210

Chapter 210

“Yes?” I asked coldly.

“I want to talk to you.” She glanced at Tyler. “Alone.”

Tyler bristled. “Whatever you have to say to her, you can say in front of me.”

Serena simply folded her arms, waiting. I sighed and turned to Tyler. “Get in the car,” I said. “I’ll just be a minute.”

My brother hesitated, clearly uncertain, but finally relented. Once he was in the car with the doors shut, I followed Serena a few paces away. “Well?” I asked. “What is it?”

“Stay away from Kade.” She whirled on me, eyes flashing dangerously with a look I knew all too well. A look that was even more poisonous than the knife she had plunged into my heart. “You can be here to take care of Debbie with your so-called ‘powers’, but you can’t have him. If I catch you so much as breathing the same air as Kade outside of what’s strictly necessary, we’ll have a repeat of what happened seven years ago. Are we clear?”

I couldn’t help it. I laughed. “I’m not interested in your husband, Serena. I’m here for Debbie, nothing more. Don’t worry I won’t ruin your precious family.”

Serena pursed her lips. “And what happens if you cure Debbie, hm? Will you reveal everything then, or keep your little mouth shut?”

I wanted to tell Serena that I would let Debbie exonerate me if I could, that I would finally achieve the peace of mind that I had desired since I was just a child. That her reign of terror wouldn’t last forever, no matter how much she wanted it to.

But I didn’t say any of those things. Serena had already done unspeakable things-who was to say what she might do to Debbie, who was completely defenseless, if she thought her cushy life was at risk?

No. I had to keep those thoughts close to my chest for now. Until I was certain that Debbie would be okay, I wasn’t going to tell Serena a damn thing.

“Don’t worry,” I said evenly. “Once Debbie is cured, you’ll never see me again.”

Serena looked pleased. “Good. I’d hate to have to resort to other measures, sister.”

“I’m not your sister.” I turned away. “I haven’t been for a very long time.”

With that, I climbed into the car and buckled my seatbelt. Serena was already walking back to the house, her posture straight and her head held high. She seemed awfully pleased with the outcome of that conversation.

Good. If Debbie was going to tell Kade the truth about what happened twelve years ago, then I wanted Serena to be completely oblivious until then.

By the time we returned to Nightshade, I was utterly exhausted from barely sleeping all night. I decided that I needed to stuff myself with a rather large meal and get a good night’s rest before I got to work on Debbie’s treatment plan.

But the moment I set foot in the foyer, I smelled it. Smoke. It was acrid and strange, not the scent of wood burning, but something foreign that burned my eyes and nostrils.

“Oh, Goddess,” I muttered, pinching my nose. “What is that awful smell?”

Lana appeared at the top of the stairs with something in her arms. Fabric. Tattered and burnt to a crisp like it had spontaneously combusted. I recognized the luxurious, heavy material in her arms, and felt my heart sink.
