Chapter 215
Kade’s POV
“Mason? Is that really you?”
Kade froze in the doorway to the drawing room. Mason, the man he hadn’t seen since before they were even men, was sitting on the sofa beside Serena with a cup of tea pinched between his fingers. He set the cup down on the saucer and stood, spreading his arms wide.
“Kade! Long time no see!”
“Yes… It has been a while,” Kade said, clapping his old friend on the back with a tight smile.
“Oh, come now. Don’t be a stranger.” Mason grinned and pulled Kade in for an unexpected embrace. An embrace that had Kade stiffening. “What?” Mason laughed, pulling back just enough to look at Kade. “Preparing yourself for a hot knife in the back?”
“Not exactly.” Kade forced a smile and pulled away, tugging his waistcoat down in the front where it had rumpled. “Forgive me. I’m just… I wasn’t expecting to see you again after…”
Kade’s voice trailed off, not that he needed to say it out loud. Both he and Mason recalled that night all those years ago all too well. It was the last time they had spoken after being close, or as close as they could be given the distance between their packs, since they were children.
That was the night that their lifelong friendship had come to its end.
When Kade and Mason were eight, they met while Kade’s parents were visiting Mason’s pack for an Alpha summit. Kade had spotted Mason sitting under one of the banquet tables, his face sticky with sugar. Intrigued and tired of listening to the adults talk, he crawled under the table with him.
“What’s that?” Kade had asked, peering at the treat in Mason’s hand.
“Cookies. Want some?” Mason had grinned, sporting two missing teeth, and revealed his secret stash. A platter of cookies he’d stolen from one of the buffet tables. Kade still remembered how his eyes had widened like he had hit the fucking jackpot over some cookies.
They gorged themselves on cookies until they were sick. And the rest was history. Every pack event after that, Mason and Kade were inseparable. They bonded over shared experiences as young Alphas in a way that Kade had never truly been able to connect with anyone before.
By the time they were teenagers, they considered themselves to be best friends, even if they only got to see each other a few times a year. They sent letters about girls they had crushes on and the various ways their fathers had annoyed them that week. The letters eventually became more philosophical in nature as they grew, musing over their futures as Alphas, their dreams, their hopes.
Kade always looked forward to the rare times when he would get to see his friend in person. When they would stay up all night just talking. Mason knew his deepest, darkest secrets. And Kade knew Mason’s.
And then Kade’s parents died. Debbie was raped. Everything changed.
Mason showed up at Kade’s doorstep not long after it all happened, with a gift basket and an apologetic look. Kade tried to send him away. He refused. He’d tried to force his way into the house, claiming that he knew Kade
