Kade blinked. He recalled receiving the invitation, but he had ignored it, just as he did every year. He hadn’t attended a single one of those balls since the one he attended in Nightshade seven years ago. He didn’t want to run into Samson or Tyler, and besides, he never really enjoyed them anyway.
“Oh, I don’t know if-”
“I already accepted the invitation, darling.” Serena stood, smiling demurely.
Kade looked at her. She knew he hated those parties, but she had accepted anyway. Now it was too late to back out of it, wasn’t it? The way she was looking at him indicated that it was.
“I see.” Kade forced his expression into neutrality. “Well, I guess we’re going then, aren’t we?”
Mason chuckled. “I guess so. Have to keep the wife happy, right?” He took Serena’s hand and kissed it, making her blush. “I’ll have a wife of my own soon too, you know.”
“Oh, really?” Kade’s brows lifted. Mason had always said that he would never get married when they were kids.
“I know that look,” Mason said with a shrug. “I’ve changed, Kade. I’ve grown up. As have you, it seems. A beautiful wife, a thriving pack, and Serena was just telling me about your daughter… Anyway, I should probably get going.” He glanced at his watch. “I’ve got three more packs to visit by the end of the day. I’ll see you soon, though.”
Kade walked Mason to the door, where Mason stopped, turning to him, and clasped Kade’s shoulder.
“I really hope we’ll have a chance to talk more at the Alpha Ball,” he said quietly. “My future Luna will be there; I’m dying for you to meet her.”
With that, Mason left. Kade watched him climb into his car and pull out of the driveway. Once he was out of sight, he turned to find Serena hovering directly behind him.
“I’ll need a new dress, of course,” she said immediately. “Something fresh and fashionable.”
“Why did you accept the invitation?” Kade asked. “You know I hate those kinds of parties. And we’ve never been to one together.”
“Which is precisely why I think we should go.” Serena smiled, leaning up on her tiptoes to press a kiss to Kade’s cheek. “Besides, wouldn’t it be good for Crescent Hollow and Embergrove to solidify your friendship again? You and Mason have been so distant.”
Kade’s jaw clenched. He hated that Serena was right for once.
Serena’s POV
Serena sauntered away, hips swaying. The moment she was out of Kade’s sight, though, she leaned against the wall and drew in a shaky breath.
Well, that had gone a little better than she had expected. She thought Kade would immediately decline the invitation, embarrassing both of them. But he intended to go to the Alpha Ball. With her.
