Chapter 22
I let out a small breath of relief as the Omegas released me and Tyler began to whisk me away. Natasha’s eyes burned holes into the back of my head, but I knew Tyler and Samson would listen to me.
They seemed to be some of the only people in the world who would.
A little while later, we were back exactly where we’d been a few days ago–standing in the living room of the Alpha House while Natasha paced furiously in front of the fireplace. Tyler was pressing a cup of steaming hot tea into my hands while Samson studied the notepad again.
“Well, I think we can resolve this quickly,” Samson said, withdrawing a pen from his pocket and flipping to an unused page of the notepad. He handed both to me. “Elena, write something down. Anything.”
I furrowed my brow but obeyed, writing, “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” I then handed the pad back to Samson, and his eyes lit up.
“See?” He held the notepad out to Natasha. “It’s not even her handwriting. This may have been in Elena’s room, but she didn’t write it.”
Natasha’s face puckered. “But she still could be a spy. A traitor.”
“She’s not a spy, Mother. Why do you hate her so much?” Tyler rubbed my back soothingly and shot his mother a disappointed look. “She hasn’t hurt you any.”
“You don’t know what she’s capable of.” Natasha’s gaze was red with fury as she looked at me.
“That’s enough, Natasha.” Samson’s face had begun to flush, and it seemed he was reaching the end of his rope. I’ve had enough of your constant scheming against this poor girl–what has gotten into you?!”
Just then, the door opened. Samson’s Beta poked his head inside and gestured for Samson to come over. He whispered something in the Alpha’s ear, and Samson straightened, smoothing down his shirt and schooling his expression into one of neutrality.
“Alpha Kade from Crescent Hollow pack has just arrived,” he said, turning to us.
Natasha’s face paled. I shot to my feet on instinct, heart pounding. Kade was here? Did he know I was here? Was he coming for-
“See?” Natasha pointed at me with an ugly, triumphant sneer. “See her reaction? Even if these notes aren’t hers, she’s definitely hiding from someone! Likely Alpha Kade!”
“Come on, now, Mother,” Tyler said gently, touching my arm. “Elena, why don’t you go upstairs and rest while we speak to Alpha Kade? You can use my room.”
Tyler led me over to the stairs and up to his room on the second floor, ignoring Natasha’s protests. “Wait here,” he said, turning to leave. “I’ll be back later-”
My hand shot out and grabbed his arm before he could go.
“Please don’t tell Kade I’m here,” I whispered desperately. I trusted Tyler–I had to. “Please.”
Tyler stared at me for a moment in shock, but then nodded. “Alright. If it’s that important to you…”
“It is.” I gave him a meaningful look, saying a thousand things all at once without words.
To my utter relief, Tyler seemed to understand and nodded. “Okay. Don’t worry, Elena. You’re safe here.”
