Chapter 220

My mouth dropped open. I wasn’t expecting Natasha to confess to something like that. Was she just covering up for Beth for some reason? Or was she afraid that I might finally tell my father about what happened all those weeks ago if she didn’t end this now?
“Natasha?” My father frowned. “It was you? But that’s impossible. You were gone all weekend, visiting your family!”
“I know.” Her face fell slightly, and she looked at the floor with an expression of what seemed like genuine remorse. If I didn’t know better, I might have believed it. But I did know better, and I didn’t believe it.
“I went into your room on Saturday morning,” she went on. “I was looking for something-a necklace I’ve been missing. I thought maybe you borrowed it, so I searched your closet. I lit a candle while I was there. The match lit quickly, burning my fingers, so I panicked and threw it out the window.”
I didn’t believe that story one bit, but I remained silent, waiting to hear what else she had to say.
“I guess I forgot to put the candle out and close the window before I left,” she said softly. “The wind must have blown the flame and caught your dress on fire. I’m sorry, Elena. I know how much you cherished that dress.”
I couldn’t speak. I just stared at her. This whole story was a load of lies, of course. Natasha had been furious about the dress from the beginning, and we both knew that I would never “borrow” her jewelry. She didn’t go into my room. Beth did. Probably at her request.
“How does that explain Beth being seen crawling out of the bushes during the fire, then?” I asked, gesturing to Beth, who was now clinging to her father’s side.
Natasha glanced at Beth. Beth’s mouth opened and closed a couple of times, but then she said in a sweet voice, I fell into the bushes while I was running to call for help about the fire.”
I narrowed my eyes at her. Yeah, right. I saw right through her lie like a piece of clear glass.
“Ahem.” My father cleared his throat, causing us all to look at him. He pocketed the match. “Listen, all of you, it’s nearly time for us to leave for Embergrove. Can we all just drop the matter for now? And enjoy the one annual tradition that I enjoy the most? We can discuss this at another point.
))
My shoulders sagged. As much as I wanted to keep arguing, my father was right. Now wasn’t the time, and I didn’t have proof that Natasha and Beth were lying through their teeth. Not proof that they wouldn’t outright deny, at least.
I didn’t bother answering. I turned on my heel and walked out, heading straight to my room.
A few moments later, Beth followed me. I heard her come up behind me just as I reached my bedroom door. She shoved something into my hands. The rags.
((
“You’ll have to wear these, of course,” she sneered, her voice low enough so only I could hear. “You lost the bet, after all.”
“Are you insane? I didn’t lose the bet.” I shoved the dress back into her hands. “Maybe Natasha and your father protected you, but you and I both know that I won that bet fair and square. I found the evidence, just like I said I would.”

Beth’s jaw tightened. “So you’re just going to refuse the terms. Just like that.”
