Elena’s POV

“Elena. Beth.” Melvin stood, looking between me and Beth with confusion. It wasn’t exactly a common occurrence for the two of us to get within twelve feet of each other, so for us to walk into the room together was strange indeed. “Did you two need something?”

“Yes, actually.” I reached into my pocket, pulled out the burnt match, and walked over to my father. Right past Melvin. “I found this under my window. A witness from the day of the fire says they saw Beth climbing out of the bushes in that exact spot, and she has an infected scratch on her arm to prove it.”

The room fell silent. I could feel Melvin and Natasha’s eyes boring into the back of my head, but I didn’t look at them. I placed the match in my father’s palm and took a step back.

“What are you saying?” Melvin whispered.

“I’m saying that that fire wasn’t an accident,” I said, pointing at Beth. “She did it on purpose. I’m not sure why -maybe she was put up to it, or maybe she was just being petty-but it doesn’t matter. What’s done is done, and she’s the one who did it. Isn’t that right, Beth?”

Beth opened her mouth, her face paling slightly, but before she could speak, Melvin suddenly cut in in a low voice, “How dare you?”

“Pardon me?” I turned to the Delta with my shoulders back and my chin lifted. His angry tone may have frightened me once, but not anymore. Not in a long time.

He took a step toward me. “How dare you falsely accuse my daughter of arson? All because you’re upset that your precious new dress got ruined?” He scoffed. “Why don’t you just admit that you were careless enough to leave a candle lit in your room all weekend, and stop trying to pin the blame on others?”

“Trust me, if the case were truly that simple, then I would gladly take the blame,” I replied coolly. “But it wasn’t. Nothing else in my room was damaged, and I found proof-”

“Your so-called ‘proof’ doesn’t mean one iota,” Melvin cut me off with a hateful sneer that made the scar on his face crinkle. “And it especially doesn’t mean that my daughter was involved.”

“So you’re saying that the evidence I found was… what? Fake?” I snorted. “Look, Melvin, I’m sorry you’re hurt that your precious daughter might not be so precious after all, but it’s no secret that you and Natasha have been training her to be your little minion lately.”

“You’re just jealous of her, aren’t you?”

“Jealous? What does that have to do with anything?” To think that I had ever been jealous of someone like Beth, who was cruel and hateful, was almost laughable.

“You’ve always been jealous of my beautiful daughter,” Melvin hissed. “You must have found out that she’ll be attending this year’s Alpha Ball, and you couldn’t stand the thought of her stealing your spotlight. Hell, maybe you staged the fire yourself, just to get her-”

“That’s enough, Melvin.”

I had expected my father to be the first to break up the argument. But he was silent, still staring at the match in
