Chapter 222
Elena’s POV
I wound up selecting a dress I already had in my closet. It was one of my favorites, actually-a simple and understated yet elegant piece that I had purchased for my twenty-third birthday party several years back. I always liked how it fit me, and I had filled out a little over the last few weeks now that I wasn’t living on the road, so it hugged my curves nicely.
It seemed to piss Beth off, too, so that made it even better. I could see her glaring at me from where she stood by the entrance, but I ignored her entirely.
I stopped by the doorway, touching my nightshade pendant with two fingers as I scanned the crowd for Tyler. I didn’t spot him right away.
But I did spot them.
Kade and Serena were already on the dance floor with the other couples, swaying to the soft orchestral music. Serena was dressed in the most decadent pink gown I’d ever seen; it was actually quite exquisite, like something out of an art piece.
The exact sort of thing that a Luna would wear.
I shouldn’t have cared-and I didn’t-but seeing them together like that made feelings bubble up that I had been pushing down for a long time now. The memory of yesterday morning, when I had found them in an intimate embrace, flashed through my mind like a movie I didn’t want to see.
My wolf snarled.
“He’s ours. What is she doing? They can’t be-”
“They’re married, Ava.” I gently soothed my wolf as best I could and looked away, pretending I hadn’t seen them at all. “They’re entitled to dance together at a ball.”
Ava whined. “You know that should be you in his arms.”
“It shouldn’t be, actually. And for the record, I’m not taking any advice from you tonight. The supermoon is just making you crazy.”
Even my wolf had no response to that, because she knew it was true. The full moon was already a difficult time for us, but the supermoon was even worse. Adding the romantic atmosphere of the Alpha Ball was just the cherry on top.
Thankfully, I didn’t have a chance to give in to my urges-whether to walk up to Kade and Serena and separate them or just turn around and leave, I wasn’t quite sure-before a tall figure stepped into my path.
“Elena. You look…” Mason grinned, shaking his head as if at a loss for words. He took my hand and pressed a kiss to my knuckles. I couldn’t help it. I blushed.
“Alpha Mason,” I said, dipping into a slight curtsy. “Your home is lovely.”
“Thank you.” He turned, gesturing broadly at the cavernous banquet hall. Our hall in Nightshade was large, but this was on another level. The vaulted ceilings were painted with ornate frescoes of gods dancing under the light

of the full moon, and the stained glass windows depicted wolves howling.
The largest window was of the Moon Goddess herself in all of her resplendent glory, clad in shining armor with a feathered helmet tucked under her arm while she lifted the first moon into the sky with one hand.
“I come from a long line of artists, architects, and sculptors,” he explained, following my gaze. He laughed and scratched his temple with one finger. “Unfortunately, I just got the ‘businessman’ gene.”
