Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 223

Chapter 223

To my relief, Mason didn’t look disappointed at all. “Well, accidents happen. What you’re wearing tonight is actually even more beautiful-it really shows off your sense of style.” He leaned in a little closer, smirking. And I have to admit, it’s sort of refreshing to see a woman dressed simply amongst all of the others dressed to the nines.”

I pulled my head back. “Pardon?” I asked. “Mason, no offense, but I don’t appreciate having other women compared to me like that. Every woman here tonight looks stunning. And there’s nothing wrong with wearing expensive, lavish fashion if you can afford it, so long as it’s not hurting anyone or harming the planet.”

Mason stared at me for a moment with surprise written clearly across his face. I wondered if I had offended him, but he smiled.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I didn’t mean to offend.” He gestured to my empty hands. “Would a drink smooth it over, by any chance?”

I hesitated, but then nodded, smiling slightly. “Sure. A drink sounds nice.”

Mason looked relieved. “Perfect. Stay right here. I’ll get you something special from the bar.”

He left after that. I could see his head bobbing through the crowd, towering over everyone he passed. While I waited, I twirled my necklace between my fingers, chewing on the inside of my cheek. The crowd had only thickened during our conversation, and I still didn’t spot Tyler anywhere.

I decided to move toward the wall, where it was a little quieter. Mason would probably spot me anywhere, given his natural vantage point. I leaned against the stones, savoring the coolness that seeped through the thin fabri of my dress.

I wasn’t alone for long, however, when I felt a tap on my shoulder. Figuring it was Mason, I turned, reaching for the drink. But two hands clasped the one I extended.

“You’re the Silver healer!” a young, handsome man with striking green eyes exclaimed. He wore a dark gray doublet with what appeared to be hand-embroidered designs of various medicinal herbs swirling across the collar, and his curly red hair was mussed all over like he’d been nervously playing with the coils for his entire

life.

“Um… Yes,” I said, glancing at our hands. He was still shaking mine vigorously. “I’m sorry, do I know you…?”

“Oh, shoot. Sorry.” He released me and smoothed his hands over his doublet. I noticed that his left pinky finger was smudged with ink, like he wrote with his left hand. “I’m not used to this sort of thing.” He gestured around us at the party. “I’m Harrison. Harrison Maevis. I’m a colleague of Jayne’s-your mentor?”

I gasped, pushing away from the wall. “Oh! You’re the healer she reached out to about the Luna’s Bane!” I tried not to point out the fact that I was surprised that he was a man; most healers were women. In fact, I wasn’t sure if I had ever encountered a male healer before.

“That’s me,” he said. “Jayne told me you would be here tonight.” He glanced around again, and almost seemed to curl in on himself when a fresh bottle of champagne was popped somewhere and a raucous wave of cheers went up. “I would have preferred someplace a little quieter, but…” He shrugged.

I snorted. “Tell me about it. This is not my scene, either. Especially not these days.”
