Mason looked up at me, and his expression softened. “I built it for you,” he whispered.
“What?” I breathed. I froze.
“Remember when I told you earlier that I only called you my future Luna because of Kade?” His hands began to wrap my arm in a white bandage, but it was too tight. “That was a lie. I saw how upset you were, so I panicked. But Elena, I want to marry you.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. He had to be joking. I let out a wry laugh. “Haha. Very funny.”
“I’m being serious, Elena.”
I stared at Mason, searching his face for even the smallest hint of humor, but there was none. He was being serious.
“Mason…”
“Ever since I spoke to your father for the first time all those months ago,” he said, “I knew we were meant to be. So I built this for you.”
“Mason—”
“You can be in charge of it, of course,” Mason continued, ignoring me. He stood, not even having finished wrapping my arm—too busy musing to remember what he was doing. “You’ll have all the books and supplies you could ever want. I’ll support your career as long as you’d like. Hell, you don’t even have to leave this room! Although, once we have pups, I’m sure you’ll want to make them your priority instead.”
I stood, pressing my hand into the poorly-wrapped bandages. “You think I’d… Have your pups?” I whispered.
He nodded, smiling that handsome smile, and reached into his pocket. When he withdrew it, he was holding a beautiful diamond ring that caught the light.
“This was my grandmother’s engagement ring. Your father told me you don’t care much for diamonds, but…” He shrugged, smile widening. “It’s sentimental.”
“My father?” I whispered.
Mason looked at me imploringly, and suddenly, it hit me. It hit me so hard I took a step back.
My father. He had arranged this, hadn’t he? He’d told Mason that I would… That I wanted…
I couldn’t stay here.
“I have to go,” I said, turning.
“Elena, wait!” Mason’s hand shot out, grabbing my injured arm. He didn’t even seem to notice that his fingers were pressing painfully into my wound. He was too focused on the ring in his hand. “Will you marry me?”
“No.” I wrenched my arm away, even though it pulled at my wound and made me wince. The bandages unraveled, falling to a pile at my feet. “Mason, I’m sure you’re very nice, but I’m not interested in marrying you. Even if I were, we only just met.”
