Chapter 230
Elena’s POV
The room fell silent. Kade and Tyler froze in the doorway, staring at the scene before them in shock.
Three girls on the floor, gasping for breath and clutching wounds. One cowering in the corner with wide eyes and a heaving chest. And then there was me and Beth-both holding improvised weapons. Scissors. A toilet seat cover. Poised to strike.
Beth immediately dropped her scissors, sending them sliding across the floor. Her lips quivered. “She attacked us!” she cried, pointing at me. “She hurt three of my friends, and she was gonna kill me!”
“That’s not true.” I calmly set the toilet seat cover on the sink. “They were going to-”
“Oh, Goddess! What happened here?! Are you okay?”
Before I could finish explaining myself, Serena burst into the room in a whirlwind of pink taffeta. She looked at the scene with horror, but I could see that familiar gleam in her eyes beneath the performance. I knew exactly what she was going to do before she even did it.
She rushed over to Beth’s friend, the one who had just narrowly avoided being crushed by the door, and helped her to her feet. She then gathered the girl in her arms, embracing her, and whirled on me.
“You attacked these poor girls!”
“It’s true,” Beth sobbed. Snot was running down from her nose, and her eyes were filled with tears, but she didn’t let them fall. She couldn’t ruin her makeup, after all. “We were just using the restroom, and she started talking about ‘revenge’. I think it’s because she still thinks I burned her dress.”
My jaw clenched. I ignored Beth and looked straight at Tyler. His face was full of fury, but it wasn’t directed at me. He knew Beth’s schemes-and Serena’s schemes-just as well as I did, even if no one else wanted to see
them.
“Get out,” Tyler hissed, stepping forward. “You’re going home, Beth. When I return to the pack, we’ll discuss what to do with you.”
Beth’s eyes flashed. “What to do with me? Elena is the one who-”
“What happened here?” A low, familiar voice cut Beth off. Kade was pushed aside by Mason’s tall frame. He stopped in the doorway, staring at the scene, then at the broken door lying on the floor.
I felt my stomach clench as Beth began giving him the same song and dance she’d given the others. Mason would surely take their side. Or so I thought.
But he didn’t.
He simply stepped forward, pointing at my arm. “You’re bleeding.”
I looked down, and indeed, I was injured. There was a large cut across my forearm. I wasn’t sure how it had gotten there, but someone must have scratched me during the fight. It was deep, too, deeper than I expected. And the moment Mason pointed it out, it started to hurt.

His face fell. “We can court first, if that’s what you’d prefer.”
“No. I’m sorry, but no.” I continued backing away. “I would never agree to an arranged marriage. Not with you, and not with anyone.” My chest burned, and tears pricked my eyes, but not for Mason. I couldn’t believe my father had done this, knowing everything I had been through.
“Elena! Elena, wait!” Mason called after me, but I didn’t stop. I turned and fled, leaving behind the bloodied bandages and the perfect prison that he had built just for me.
Kade’s POV
The scent hit him before he saw her drive away. She was in the back of a car with Tyler-who Kade now knew to be her brother-sitting in the seat beside her.
And she had left a trail of blood.
Just small droplets. But it was enough.
The scent was overwhelming. Kade crouched, brushing two fingers through one of the drops, and lifted it to his nose. He could feel his wolf surge, howling into the night.
“MATE!” he howled.
But there was something else there, too. A name. The name of a woman who had died seven years ago.
