It was Elena’s doing. Serena was sure of it.
By the time Serena woke, she had come up with a plan. One of her agents informed her that “Elena” was spotted leaving Nightshade pack early that morning in wolf form. It was discovered that she was going to the healer’s house—Harrison. That nervous little man with the messy hair and the outdated sense of style.
Serena had to use this to her advantage.
She found Kade in the kitchen, preparing coffee. He didn’t look up as she entered, although he did pour her a cup, likely out of obligation rather than genuine kindness.
“Did you hear?” she asked, eyeing him over the rim of her cup.
“Hear what?” Kade poured the creamer into his coffee and stirred it with a spoon.
“You didn’t?” Serena lifted a brow. “Elena went to that healer’s house first thing this morning. What was his name? Harrison?”
Kade jerked his head up at that. His eyes flashed silver, and Serena knew she had hit her mark. “She what?” he hissed. “How did you find that out?”
Serena lifted one shoulder. “Just a rumor.” She set her coffee aside and took a step closer, touching his arm. “Don’t you think it’s interesting that she would flirt with you every time she comes here, but she’s leading on multiple other men?” She tilted her head. “I would never be so disloyal, you know. That’s why I feel it’s only right to tell you.”
Kade’s jaw clenched. Serena could see it in his eyes—the jealousy.
“You need to sever your mate bond,” Serena whispered. “She’s taking advantage of you. Of your good heart.”
“No.” Kade pulled his arm away and left his coffee untouched on the counter. “I’m taking Ivy out for the day. Don’t wait up for us tonight.”
Serena blinked. “What? Where are you going?”
“On a drive,” was all he said. Serena knew where he was going, of course. After her. But no matter what she said, Kade wouldn’t listen.
Serena’s heart leapt into her throat, and she stumbled back so hard she slammed into the chair behind her. She lost her footing and slipped, falling to the floor with a crash. Her head cracked against the arm of the chair, and pain shot through her.
Ajax was there in an instant, but he didn’t help Serena. He rushed past her, gripping Debbie’s shoulders as she screamed and kicked and tried to bite him.
“Debbie! Debbie, it’s okay!” he shouted. “You’re safe!”
Debbie didn’t respond. Just kept staring at Serena and screaming like a banshee.
Serena pushed herself to her feet, pressing her fingers to her throbbing temple. A bump was already forming there, but she hardly felt the pain. She backed away, first one step, then another. When she left the room, she leaned against the wall outside, gasping for breath.
Did Debbie know that Serena was the one who caused her downfall all those years ago?
