Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 236

Elena’s POV

The journey to Harrison’s home was quicker than I anticipated. Maybe I moved faster than usual in wolf form, or maybe my mind was still racing from last night. Either way, it felt like only a short while on the road before I reached my destination.

His home was situated at the center of one of our neighboring packs, Pinewood. The territory was aptly named; towering pine trees surrounded the walls and the smell of sap hung heavy in the air.

I shifted back at the border and spoke to the guard. He studied me for a moment, ensuring I wasn’t a rogue, then let me in. I made my way through the town, eventually finding Harrison’s home after asking someone for directions.

I was surprised to find that the healer didn’t live in some remote tower or wooded cottage, but a simple brownstone apartment in the heart of the town. The curtains were drawn tight, though, and there were no decorations on the front stoop like his neighbors. Before I even knocked, the scent of something burning made my nose wrinkle.

“What’s going on in there?” a shrill voice suddenly said. I looked over to see a rather angry-looking old woman poking her head out of the window next to me that led to the adjoined brownstone. “It smells like a fire!”

“I don’t know. I just got here.”

“Well, if you see him, tell Harrison I’ve already called the property manager! He’s not supposed to be running his experiments in there!”

The woman disappeared after that. I grabbed the large brass knocker and rapped it on the door a few times. As soon as I did that, there was a cacophony of noise inside—a cat hissing, glass breaking, and the sound of Harrison’s muffled voice calling out, “No solicitors!”

My mouth twitched. “I’m not selling anything.”

More noise, something else breaking, and a crash. I heard Harrison curse loudly. Then, the door swung open. He was doubled over, breathless, and his face was covered in what appeared to be soot.

“Elena!” He limped out of the way, still rubbing his knee where he had apparently bumped it. He wore goggles and a rubber apron. “Come in, come in! Sorry for the mess.”
