Chapter 24

Samantha’s POV
I pressed my hand to my chest as I peeked through the curtains. Kade’s car was pulling out of the driveway below, and his departure was making my wolf bristle with disappointment. My wolf–who had been dormant for days.
now.
“Where have you been?” I asked, retreating into that mental space that I’d occupied for so long–so many lonely and painful nights when I had no one else but my wolf to comfort me. But it was still empty and cold, the tall grass rustled by that ghost wind.
“Our mate’s presence brought me back,” my wolf’s voice carried across the wind, although I still couldn’t see her.
“That doesn’t make any sense. He rejected us. He’s not our mate anymore.”
“You didn’t get a chance to accept the rejection before you died.” Ava sounded equal parts relieved and frustrated. “The mate bond still exists in some capacity.”
I dragged my lower lip through my teeth, considering her words. Finding out that my mate bond still existed should have made me happy, but it just made me feel trapped all over again.
“I don’t want to be involved with Kade anymore,” I said firmly. “If he comes near us again, you can’t reveal yourself to him.”
“Of course.” Ava’s voice was growing fainter. “I understand…”
And just like that, she was gone again. A moment later, the bedroom door swung open, revealing Tyler and Samson standing there. Tyler rushed forward and wrapped his arms around me before I could speak.
“He’s gone,” Tyler said gently. “You’re safe.”
I let out a breath of relief and pulled back to look at them both. “Thank you.”
“We’re not sure what your connection is to Alpha Kade, exactly,” Samson said tentatively, stepping into the room, “but whatever it is, you’re protected here with us. He won’t be able to touch you.”
“Good. That’s… Good.” I would have smiled were it not for the terror still tugging at my nerves.
Just then, Natasha swept into the room looking slightly windswept and a little wet from the rain that had begun to fall during this whole ordeal. “Where did you go?” Samson asked, turning to her.
She waved her hand dismissively. “Just needed some air. To think,” She turned to me. “And I decided that we got off on the wrong foot.”
My brows shot up in surprise, but before I could say anything, Natasha went on, “Let me take you out tomorrow morning. Since you’ll be living in Nightshade long term, you’ll need supplies. I’ll buy you some clothes and anything else you might need.”
I blinked in surprise, half expecting Natasha to laugh cruelly and tell me it was a joke, but she seemed genuine. Samson smiled and turned to her. “Turning a new leaf, darling?”
“Something like that.” Natasha straightened. “If you want to go, be ready by nine o’clock tomorrow. I’ll show you around the pack while we’re out.”
With that, she turned and walked rigidly out of the room. I looked up at Tyler, who was grinning now.
“See?” he asked, glancing down at me. “I told you she would come around, didn’t I?”

The next morning, I woke bright and early for my unexpected outing with Natasha. I put on my gray Omega uniform–I didn’t have much else, although I supposed that would change soon–and met her outside the pack house at nine o’clock on the dot.
