Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 30

Chapter 30

Beth’s face immediately went red. “He doesn’t like her-she’s just a convenient whore to keep in his bed while he searches for his real mate,” she snarled.

Lana snorted. “Right. And you’re the shining beacon of propriety. Whose bed did you climb into this week, Beth? Another Gamma? Or perhaps an Omega this time?”

“Lana.” I put my hand on my friend’s shoulder. “It’s okay. It’s just a dress. I haven’t even tried on the other ones

“No,” Lana cut me off, refusing to be cowed. “It’s not even about the dress; it’s a matter of principle. She can’t just storm in here and make demands like that when she doesn’t even belong in Nightshade.”

Beth looked like she’d just sucked on a lemon, but before she could retort, Corinne stepped in. “That’s enough, girls. Beth, I don’t want to have to report this to your father. And Lana, you should know better than to lower yourself by saying cruel things.”

Beth hesitated, clearly torn between continuing the argument and deferring to a superior, but finally chose the latter and stormed out of the shop in a huff. Once she was gone, Corinne turned to me and placed her hand on my

arm.

“Don’t listen to anything those girls say, hon,” she reassured me. “They’re just jealous of you, that’s all. You should get the dress-it suits you perfectly.”

The following day was the day of the ball. I got the blue dress after all, along with a pair of strappy silver heels and a matching pair of elbow-length gloves. Lana helped curl my hair, letting it cascade down my back in soft waves, and dotted some sparkling silver eyeshadow on my eyelids.

Th

“There,” she said, leaning back to admire her handiwork, “a true Alpha in the making.”

I blushed, but I couldn’t deny it; I really did look like an Alpha. Like the way I was meant to be before my life was stolen from me.

But of course I could never be an Alpha now. That life was behind me. For now, I would just focus on what I had: friends, a family, a pack I could call home without being a slave.

I met Tyler outside the ballroom, the sounds of music and laughter already emanating from within. He looked handsome in a perfectly-tailored blue suit that just happened to match the tone of my dress without even meaning to.

“Wow. Samantha, you look stunning,” Tyler said, offering me his arm.

“You’re not so bad yourself.” I smiled at him, although it didn’t quite reach my eyes. “I’m nervous,” I admitted.

Tyler patted my hand as we made our way into the ballroom. Glittering chandeliers hung overhead, casting everything in a golden glow, and the air smelled like champagne and expensive perfume. Everyone was dressed in their finest.

“Don’t worry,” Tyler reassured me. “You look like you fit right in. I’ll stay by your side all night.”

His promise was comforting, but as if summoned by it, Natasha suddenly swept toward us looking devastating in a pristine white gown that trailed behind her. If she weren’t so cruel and hateful, she might have looked beautiful.

“Tyler. There you are,” she snapped, then glared at me. “You two came together?”

Tyler nodded and grinned. “Elena is my date tonight. We didn’t even mean to match, but somehow it worked out

perfectly. Synchronicity and all that.

Natasha didn’t look pleased. In fact, she grabbed her son’s arm and wrenched him away from me. Her smile was pure malice as she said, “You should socialize with girls who might actually be your mate. Besides, Elena deserves a chance to meet her mate tonight, too.”
