Chapter 33

Samantha’s POV
Tyler’s hand was steady and gentle on my back as he led me away from Kade. The moment we were out of Kade’s line of sight, I finally felt like I could breathe again.
“I’m so sorry,” Tyler murmured, ensuring we found a spot on the dance floor as far from Kade as we could manage. “I had no idea he was coming tonight.”
My throat bobbed. “I thought you said he declined the invitation.”
“He did. Or so I thought.” Tyler placed one hand on my lower back, the other gripping mine. I rested my free arm on his shoulder and let him lead me in a slow waltz. The room spinning around us as we twirled was a welcome feeling, as if it could blur out the rest of the world along with the problems it brought. “I guess he changed his mind.”
I had a feeling I knew why; he must have found out that I would be here tonight. The way he had immediately sought me out like a bloodhound chasing its prey certainly pointed to that fact; or at the very least, he thought he might find me here since the Alpha Ball was being held in Nightshade pack.
The thought that I might never be able to escape from this as long as Kade knew where I was, even if he didn’t necessarily know who I was-not yet, at least-was terrifying.
Tyler must have noticed the worried expression on my face, because he gently reassured me, “I meant it when I said I won’t let him touch you, Elena.” I was relieved that he used my fake name here, even if no one else could hear us over the music and the sound of revelry around us. “You’re safe here,”
I wanted to believe that. I really did. But as long as Kade could set foot within Nightshade’s borders, how could I ever sleep peacefully?
Either way, I knew I would have to leave the party before midnight now. It wasn’t a problem before when I thought Kade wouldn’t be here, but now that he was, it wasn’t safe.
Midnight was when wolves began finding their mates. It was when the full moon’s power was strongest, and even the faintest bonds could surge to life like wildfire. My own wolf, wise as she was, was already growing more desperate by the minute.
I made a mental note to leave the party before then. To lock myself in my room and ride out the storm until I was certain Kade was nowhere near Nightshade territory.
Finally, the song came to an end and our footsteps slowed. I was a little breathless and dizzy from dancing, so Tyler took my hand and led me away from the dance floor.
“Come on,” he said, pulling me toward the bar area. “Let’s get a drink.”
As we approached the bar, we found Lana standing at a table nearby. Other males and females had gathered around it, and Lana grinned and gestured to us when she spotted us.
“Play a drinking game with us!” Lana said, pressing cups into our hands and pouring a deep, rich red wine from a bottle.
I tilted my head. “What kind of game?”
“It’s an old Nightshade game,” Lana explained. “Males challenge each other to a drinking contest; whoever loses has to give up his current female partner for a dance.”

“So you’re basically betting on females,” I pointed out, bristling slightly.
Lana giggled. “Sort of. It’s all in good fun, though. If you don’t want to dance, you don’t have to, although you do have to take a shot if you opt out of dancing.”
