Chapter 34
The other contestants roared with laughter. The Gamma’s, Errick’s, face turned beet red. “It was an accident!” he protested, to which Lana just shrugged.
Next it was Tyler’s turn. Some of the other contestants exchanged glances, wondering who might be bold enough to challenge the young Alpha himself, but then a low voice cut in, “I’ll do it.”
We all turned, and my stomach plummeted for a third time that night.
Kade. Of course it was Kade; who else would it be? I was just a fool for thinking he might be done tormenting me for the night.
Tyler bristled, but Kade was already pouring himself a tall glass of wine.
“I told you to get lost,” Tyler muttered.
Kade shot him an arch look. “Tell you what. Let’s raise the stakes: three drinks in a row instead of one. If I lose, I’ll leave the party early. If I win, all I ask is to have a dance with her.” He gestured to me, and I felt sick, the wine lingering on my tongue suddenly tasting like ash.
Tyler’s jaw clenched. I wanted to tell him not to, but the full moon and the raging wolves of two opposing males were too much for even the usually-diplomatic Tyler to decline the challenge.
“Fine. I accept,” he said, causing my shoulders to drop in defeat. He glanced at me, noticing my pained expression, and smiled. “Don’t worry. I’ll win.”
“You’d better,” I muttered, taking a step back.
Kade’s teeth flashed as he clinked glasses with Kade. The two males began to drink, throats bobbing with each huge gulp. By the end of the first glass, which they both finished at the exact same time, the crowd had begun to chant “Drink! Drink! Drink!”
Lana refilled their cups quickly, and they began their second round. The crowd’s chanting turned into a dull roar in my ears as I watched Tyler falter, letting Kade win the second round by a millisecond.
“Losing your steam, kid?” Kade jabbed as Lana refilled their cups again. “It’s okay to give up now, you know. Even if you somehow win the third round, we’ll have to do a tiebreaker, and I really don’t think you can handle your alcohol enough to manage that.”
Tyler’s eyes flashed. “Mind your business,” he said, already stumbling over his words. “I can handle my liquor just fine.”
“Sure.” Kade lifted a brow and they began to drink.
I watched in horror as red liquid dribbled down Tyler’s chin, staining the white collar of his shirt. Meanwhile, Kade was taking the lead again. The chanting continued, but hardly heard it; all I could think about was having to dance with him.
I could decline, of course. Drink instead of dancing with Kade. But that would just make me more suspicious to him, wouldn’t it?
It seemed that there was nothing I could do to make this situation more bearable. Either way, I was screwed.
But then, suddenly, Kade was jostled from behind. He stumbled forward, wine sloshing over his cup, and the brief moment of hesitation was enough for Tyler to get the lead. Lana’s sharp gaze met mine from behind him, an almost knowing look in her eyes, before the crowd roared.

Tyler slammed his cup down on the table. He’d won the third round.
“How’s that for not holding my alcohol?!” Tyler shouted, pumping his fists in the air.
Kade’s lip curled. “We still need a tiebreaker.”
