Chapter 37
He hadn’t thought of finding love since his parents died and his sister’s life was destroyed. His mind had been too focused on taking care of the pack, on seeing revenge on the rogues who ruined everything, on punishing
Samantha for her crimes.
And even now, even knowing that he had a mate out there, he still wasn’t interested in love.
“It’s not romance I want. It’s answers.” Kade pushed away from the bar and looked around. The ballroom was chaos now, the band playing a fast-paced tune while the couples danced erratically around the floor, but Kade could sense that that “rogue” girl wasn’t here.
In fact, when he briefly let his wolf take charge and sense the bond, he could feel it tugging him beyond the ballroom. The invisible thread seemed to lead toward the grand doors, then beyond. She was surely somewhere in the house. Probably hiding.
“What would you have me do?” Ajax asked, understanding without even having to ask.
Kade knocked back the rest of his wine and set the glass on the bar, perhaps a little harder than was necessary. Create a distraction. I’m going to slip out the side door and see if I can track her down. If she’s connected to Samantha in any way, I’m going to find out tonight.”
The Beta immediately nodded and strode off, making his way toward the Alpha’s table-where Samson, Natasha, and Tyler were currently seated, looking out over the party.
Kade waited for a few minutes, watching as Ajax approached the table. Finally, Samson, Tyler, and Natasha all turned toward the source of the commotion. Kade took the opportunity to slip away, quickly weaving through the crowd of love-drunk wolves toward the side exit where he’d been watching the staff come and go all night.
Most of the servants didn’t even pay Kade a second glance as he slipped through the door and down the servants’ corridor. But one maid, hurrying past with a tray of little cakes in her hands, stopped to look at him with a
furrowed brow.
“The guest powder rooms are the other way, Sir,” she said, curtsying.
Kade forced his face into a smile that felt more like a grimace. He’d never been good at smiling; Ajax always told him he looked like a gargoyle when he tried.
“I’m actually looking for a more… private restroom,” he said, patting his belly to indicate stomach troubles. ” Perhaps something on the second floor?”
The maid’s cheeks flushed, and she pointed down the hall. “Of course. The stairs are that way. There’s a restroom through the third door on the right.”
“Thank you.” Kade turned and quickly made his way in that direction. Once he was out of sight, he picked up his pace and took the stairs two at a time.
As Kade made his way through the labyrinthine halls of the Alpha House, he felt the pull on that bond that shouldn’t have been there strengthening. And with each step toward the source of that bond, his resolve hardened.
He would get answers tonight. And he knew exactly what to do to get them.
Finally, the pull grew so strong he was certain he was close. The invisible thread led him to a nondescript door at
