Samantha’s POV
My bedroom door did little to muffle the sounds of revelry coming from all around the pack. The entire pack was in a cacophony, howls and shouts and laughter rising into the air as wolves found their mates beneath the light of the full moon.
Ava was howling, too. Not with joy like the others, but rather with the pain of knowing that she couldn’t get to him. The raw desperation in the sound made my heart ache.
Once, I had dreamed of finding my mate on a night like tonight like any other girl might. But now, it was just a burden.
Just then, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out to see a new message from Lana.
To no surprise, the text read, “Where’d you go? Party’s just getting started!”
Not wanting to get into it right now, I replied, “I got tired so I went to bed. Enjoy the party without me.”
“You’re lying. It’s about the drinking contest, isn’t it? Everyone’s talking about it.”
I groaned audibly and scrubbed my hands over my face. Of course they were. By morning, the whole debacle would likely be the talk of the pack. Everyone would want to know why Tyler and Kade had fought over me, and how I felt about it.
“Maybe I did want to get away after that,” I admitted.
“I don’t blame you, but what’s going on with you three? It was so tense for no reason.”
No reason. Yeah, right. If only she knew.
Still, I couldn’t tell her everything right now, so I just replied, “It’s nothing. Just unnecessary drama,” then tossed my phone onto the bed.
Just as I was about to go take a shower, my door handle jiggled like someone tried it from the other side. I gasped and whirled around, heart pounding; but then came a soft knock.
I furrowed my brow, thinking that Kade wouldn’t knock if he wanted to come after me; he’d likely just break the door down. Figuring it must be Tyler or even Lana, I walked over and opened the door-and immediately regretted it. (1
It was Kade after all. His gray eyes met mine in the dim light of the hallway, glowing faintly with the enhancement of our mate bond under the full moon.
I didn’t have a chance to react before Kade forced his way into my room. I stumbled back, too stunned and terrified to breathe, to scream, to call for help-all I could do was stare in shock as he shut the door behind him, cutting us off from the rest of the world, and turned to me.
In that moment, my mind raced with a thousand different things all at once. He knew who I was, I was sure of it; he had come to take me back to Crescent Hollow once and for all, or perhaps… Perhaps worse.
Kade was going to kill me.
At least, that was what I saw in those cold gray eyes: murder.
He was angry that I had run from him. Angry that I had hidden. He knew who I was, he somehow knew that I had come back from the dead, and he was going to ensure that I stayed dead this time.

“What do you want?” I managed to choke out.
