Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 45

Chapter 45

Elena’s POV

“The healer wants me to become her apprentice. She wants me to train to become a healer like her someday.”

I laid in the center of the forest clearing, my head resting on my wolf’s spectral fur. She’d finally returned-much to my relief, and hers. She was still sad and absent sometimes, but most nights, when I retreated to my mental landscape for comfort, she was there.

“You should take her up on it. We are special, you know.”

I sat up and looked at her. “Is that why I can sense illness? Because of our bloodline?”

Ava nodded. “Yes. We are Silver-it’s in our DNA. By refusing the healer’s request, you might be refusing our calling.” She yawned and settled on the grass, still exhausted from everything that happened. “But as always, I will support you, no matter what you choose.”

I looked at my wolf for a long moment, considering her words. She had already been through so much; our mate rejected us, then the rebirth, and now I was keeping us from our mate this time around…

Maybe I should pursue a future as a healer. It was in our nature, and I was clearly good at it. Even if it felt risky to do anything that might draw attention to myself, the thought of refusing the healer’s offer felt… wrong. Like denying a part of myself.

Still, it was too risky to make a decision without thinking of every possibility first. I decided to postpone my choice until I was completely certain that it would be safe to pursue something like this.

When I made my way downstairs a little while later, my stomach growling for lunch, I found Samson and Natasha standing in the living room. Natasha’s face was as white as a sheet, and Samson was staring at something in his hands. They were speaking in hushed tones, but I could hear a few words: something about a war…?

Curious, I stood in the doorway. A floorboard creaked under my feet, causing Samson to look up. His face relaxed a little when he saw me, but Natasha whipped toward me with fire blazing in her eyes and pointed a slender finger

at me.

“Get out!” she hissed.

I took a step back. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt-”

“No, I mean get out of the pack! You’re bringing even more trouble to us than I initially thought!”

I glanced at Samson, uncertain. He cleared his throat and stood. “That’s enough, Natasha. It’s not her fault.” He waved me over and handed me what he was holding, which I now realized was an official notice from Crescent Hollow pack.

It took all of two seconds to scan its contents and realize what it was.

A declaration of intent of war,

If Samson didn’t hand me over to Kade, then he was going to launch an attack on Nightshade.

Kade really hadn’t given up on me after all. He was still onto me, and what was worse, he was going to destroy the place that I had grown to love! He was going to either rip me from the one place I ever felt I could truly call ” home” or he was going to rip it from me.

Either way, I would be stuck with him.

I slowly lifted my gaze, my hands trembling as I held the paper between my fingers. Samson was looking at me with uncertain eyes. I could tell he didn’t quite know what to do. Neither did it.

“We should hand her over immediately,” Natasha said curtly. “I told you she’s only bringing trouble to Nightshade. But if you give her back to Kade, then he’ll leave us alone. It’s the only way to maintain peace!”

“Alpha Kade is a hateful warmonger,” Samson replied, glaring daggers at his wife. “He already follows the old customs by taking on slaves as punishment, and without a fair trial, no less-I won’t capitulate to a so-called ‘ Alpha’ like that.”

“So what? You’re just going to let him attack us?” Natasha scoffed. “Samson, Crescent Hollow is one of the strongest packs in the territories.”

“And Nightshade is the strongest,” Samson retorted. “Don’t forget that my bloodline hails from royal ancestry. Our people are strong and our land is protected by the Moon Goddess herself.”

Natasha looked like she was trying not to roll her eyes. She glared at me, making no effort to hide her hatred this time, then hpmhed and stormed out of the room.

Once we were alone, Samson placed a gentle hand on my shoulder. “I won’t give you to him, dear girl. He’s just trying to scare us, and it won’t work. I’ll send an emissary to speak to him. Make him believe that you’re not the one he thinks you are, and that he holds no claim over you.’

“And if he doesn’t believe you?” I whispered. Kade already didn’t believe that I wasn’t Samantha’s reincarnation, and rightfully so. After the Alpha Ball, there was no way he would fall for it now.

But Samson simply squeezed my shoulder and offered me a wan smile. “He will,” he said. “I promise. And a Thornhill never goes back on a promise.”

I hoped that was the truth.

Needing some time to think after that, I made my way to the infirmary to check on Lana. She was doing much better, although she was resting when I found her, still recovering from her emergency surgery. Her mother was sitting by her bedside, and I didn’t want to disturb them.

I was just about to leave when the lead healer stopped me.

“Elena! Just who I was hoping to see.” She held up a wicker basket. “Would you like to come with me to gather some herbs? We can discuss your apprenticeship.”

The idea of some fresh air sounded nice, so I agreed. A little while later, I found myself picking my way through a thicket in the forest on the border, searching for various herbs to create poultices and potions with. We were still safely within the walls of Nightshade, so I felt comfortable enough to let my guard down a little.

“So,” the healer said, tucking a handful of chamomile into her basket, “have you thought about my offer?”

“Yes.” Of course I had; it had been plaguing my mind ever since she brought it up last night. “But I’m not sure if it’s a good idea.”
