Chapter 46
Elena’s POV
The moment I saw the healer being dragged away, I dropped the basket of herbs I was holding and did the only thing I could think of: I mindlinked Tyler. His presence was distant and muffled but there, and when I called out through our mental bond, his awareness snapped to attention.
And then I ran.
I didn’t think about what I was going to do or how I was going to fight off the two males that I had just seen dragging off the healer. I just knew that I had to stop them.
The healer’s screams echoed through the forest, leading me to her location. I spotted the males dragging her, kicking and thrashing, around a fork in the trail. I surged forward and picked up the biggest rock I could find and lobbed it at the first male’s head as hard as I could.
“Get away from her!” I shrieked. The rock hit the side of his head, dazing him just enough for the healer to slip one wrist free from his grip.
“Get him!” she cried, kicking at his knees with all her might. “I’ll handle this one!”
I nodded and raced over to the dazed male. The training I’d been undergoing with Amelia snapped into place, and just as he lunged for me, I grabbed his forearm and spun around him, twisting his elbow as I went.
The male cried out as I pinned his arm to his back at an unnatural angle, forcing him to his knees. Meanwhile, the healer was grappling with the male who still had her gripped, cream robes flying. I saw a glint of something metallic slip out from the folds of her robe, and in one swift movement, she drove a tiny dagger into his thigh.
“Áck-you bitch!” he grunted, dropping to one knee. The healer curled her lip and swiftly kicked him in the groin, sending him down the rest of the way.
But the male I was holding back wasn’t finished. Before I could react, he bucked his head backwards, slamming his skull into my jaw so hard that I saw stars.
“Elena!” the healer cried. I stumbled backwards, feeling the taste of copper fill my mouth. The male was on me in an instant, pinning me to the forest floor with his rough hands around my throat.
The scent of rotten teeth and musk filled my nostrils. He was a rogue, I quickly realized, and the last thing I would ever see was that sneering face. As the world began to blur around the edges, my feet kicking in the dirt for purchase, nails scrabbling at his skin, the healer lunged forward and grabbed his wrists.
“Let go!” she shouted, but it was no use. The male ignored her, focusing all of his hatred on me. The other stumbled to his feet and grabbed the healer from behind, yanking her back so hard by her braid that several hairs came out in his palm.
No. I couldn’t let them take her. What if they did the same thing to her that they had done to Debbie? I couldn’t just die and let that happen to another woman.
Somehow, with one last surge of strength, I managed to get my foot under the male’s pelvis. And I kicked. Hard.
The male went flying. Much, much further than he should have.
I heard the sickening crunch of his spine as he slammed into the tree behind him, hard enough to rattle the branches and send a cascade of pine cones raining down.
I gasped for air, clutching at my neck, and rolled onto my belly. Off to the side, the other rogue was still trying to

drag the healer away, holding the bloodied knife she’d used to her neck.
But then, as if on cue, Tyler burst into the clearing. The rest was a blur-I might have lost consciousness for a moment, but the next thing I knew, Tyler was standing over the two unconscious rogues.
I sat in the living room a while later, rubbing my hand across the bandage wrapped around my sore throat. Every breath was a labor, but the healer had survived, and the rogues had been caught, so it was worth it.
Thanks to my wolf’s strength, of course-the same strength that had allowed me to beat Melvin. And thanks to Tyler, who was sitting beside me now, rubbing soothing circles on my back.
Samson stormed into the room, his cheeks red with fury. “They’ll be hanged in the morning,” he announced in a low, dangerous voice. And I found this in one of their pockets.”
He threw something at Tyler, who caught it. It was a small scrap of paper, upon which was written: “Take her alive. – Kade”
My stomach dropped. So Kade sent the rogues to kidnap me-likely related to the war he intended to start over me. But the rogues had attacked an innocent woman instead, believing that she was me.
I buried my face in my hands, willing myself not to cry. The guilt was unbearable. I would never want another person, especially not a woman, to suffer in my place. I had lived a life in which I suffered in place of Serena- how could I wish that upon someone else?
I had to do something about this. And quickly.
“..I’ll go first thing in the morning,” Tyler was saying, standing now, when I finally looked up from my hands. He was waving the note in the air with fervor. “I’ll speak to the bastard myself. Show him what we’re really about.”
“It’s too dangerous, Tyler,” Samson growled. “Let me send an emissary instead.”.
Tyler puffed his chest out. “I’m the future Alpha of Nightshade. It would be a greater show of strength if I—”
“Let me go.” I stood on shaky legs. My voice came out as a rasp, but both men immediately stopped talking and turned toward me. “This is because of me. Maybe it would be easier on everyone if I just turn myself in and face the consequences.
Both Tyler and Samson looked horrified. Meanwhile, Natasha, standing by the fireplace, sneered. No doubt she was hoping I would leave on my own. It would certainly make her life a lot easier, too.
But Samson shook his head. “Absolutely not. You’re delirious from your injuries. I won’t let you do that, especially not after that healer survived today because of you.”
“But-”
“No ‘buts’.” Tyler held his hand up to stop me. “You’ve already been through enough, and besides-with the bond we share… I couldn’t stand seeing you get hurt.”
I wanted to argue, but before I could, Tyler and Samson continued discussing next steps. I slowly sank into the chair again, slumping against the cushions with exhaustion.
“He will pay for this,” Samson said, waggling his finger assuredly. “To send rogues to my territory and hurt innocent women… I won’t stand for it…”
Their voices faded away as I felt my skin prickle. I looked over to see Natasha glaring at me with even more
