Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 47

Chapter 47

Kade’s POV

When the child wrapped her tiny fist around Kade’s finger and held his gaze as if silently daring him to take her out into the wilds, Kade knew he had just lost.

Dammit.

This baby was the one thing that Samantha had left behind for him. If Samantha was dead-well and truly dead, and all of the moments he’d wondered if the ex-rogue girl in Nightshade who looked like her was actually her were mere wishful thinking and denial-then all he had left of the bond they had unwittingly shared was this child.

Perhaps Kade had never loved Samantha. Perhaps she had ruined his life.

But this child… This child was completely innocent. She wasn’t a bad omen. She was just a little girl who no longer had a mother and whose father was actually considering leaving her out in the wilds.

“Alpha Kade!” The lead healer rushed into the nursery, breathless and frantic. “Debbie’s episode is worse than the others. You must come!”

Kade immediately clutched the baby to his chest and followed the healer out of the nursery.

“How bad is it?” Kade asked as they hurried down the hall.

The healer blanched. “Bad,” he replied. “I fear her condition is getting worse.’

Kade’s stomach clenched at the thought. Debbie’s condition had clearly been worsening for some time now, but he had foolishly hoped that it was just temporary-that she would eventually improve with the right therapy and psychological treatments.

As he approached her room, he could hear the sounds of her episode within. Screaming. Glass breaking. Thrashing. It was indeed far worse than before.

“Get out!” he heard his sister shout. “Don’t touch me! HELP!”

Kade grit his teeth and flung the door open. He found the room in disarray-curtains ripped to ribbons, vases broken on the floor, feathers from the insides of the pillows still fluttering in the air.

And Debbie, completely alone-no rogues, no attackers, just her thrashing on her bed-sat in the middle of it all.

“Debbie!” Kade rushed over to his sister. “Debbie, you’re safe! There’s no one here!”

“No!” Debbie gnashed her teeth and turned away, clutching her hair. “There are so many! They’re trying to-”

But then she heard the baby coo, and she whipped her head back around.

Her eyes widened as she saw the little bundle in Kade’s arms, and she quickly reached for the baby as if to snatch it away. Kade instinctively pulled back at first, but when he saw the anguish on her face when he pulled the bundle out of reach, he couldn’t bear to make her feel worse.

“You… want to see her?” Kade asked quietly. He sat on the edge of the bed and let her see the child.

Debbie brushed her finger across the baby’s face. Just one. The baby cooed in response, blinking at her with big blue eyes. Then, Debbie smiled and sank back onto her pillows. A soft sigh escaped her lips, and then she was asleep.

Kade turned to the healer standing in the doorway, who was sharing the same shocked look. It seemed that the child soothed Debbie, although they had never seen each other before. Curious, Kade looked back down into those big blue eyes and saw Samantha looking back up at him. The sight made his chest tighten painfully.

“What am I to do with you?” he whispered.

That night, Kade decided to delay his decision. He took the baby back to the nursery, intending to decide what to do with her tomorrow. But one thing was for certain: he couldn’t take her to the wilds. Perhaps he could convince Jack and Margaret to take her in, or find another family to adopt her.
