Chapter 52
Elena’s POV
The scent of ash and smoke made the pounding in my head even worse. Something smelling of copper was caked in my hair. A rough rope was tied around my wrists and ankles.
I woke to the feeling of my body swaying, neck aching from my head lolling backwards. Cracking my bleary eyes open, I first saw the forest floor moving above me-then I realized that I was upside down, hanging from my wrists and ankles, which were bound around a thick post.
Someone was carrying me. No-two people, one on either end of the post, toward a blazing fire.
The heat from the fire bit against my skin as they carried me closer, and I realized that I was completely nude.
Panic gripped me.
They were going to cook me over a spit. Roast me like a pig.
“Hey-wait-HELP!” I screamed, writhing against my bonds. It was no use. The rogues continued to carry me toward the fire, ignoring my pleas entirely. I squeezed my eyes shut and reached deep down for the bond I shared with Tyler, hoping to mindlink him, but he was too far away. I couldn’t sense him.
“I’ll lend you my strength,” Ava said desperately. I felt her power begin to surge through me. “But you have to hurry-I’m still weak after our rebirth!”
I didn’t waste any time. Ava’s power crested, and, gritting my teeth, I yanked at the bonds as hard as I could. The same burst of energy that I’d felt when I had fought Melvin and then the two rogues rushed through me, and the ropes broke.
Shouts rose around me as I fell to the ground and scrambled away. I twisted and leapt to my feet, whirling on my attackers with my fangs bared. But I couldn’t shift, and they knew it. They just… laughed at me.
There had to be a dozen or so rogues seated around the fire. Some young, some old. They were all staring at me, laughing. Jeering.
“Looks like our dinner is putting up a fight,” one of the rogues, a terrifying-looking male with gaunt cheeks and a scraggly beard, said. “She’s little, but scrappy. Maybe we should take her in; we could use a warrior on our side.”
Another male snorted. “Fine, but I want to have a turn with her first. She might make good pups.’

I curled my lip. “I will not join your ‘pack’, and I will not lay with any of you,” I retorted. “I’m the future Luna of Nightshade pack, and if you don’t give me back my clothes and release me at once, I’ll—”.
Suddenly, the sound of a wet cough caused me to turn. I saw a little boy sitting near the fire next to an elderly woman, who was wrapping him in my cloak. He was rocking back and forth and shivering.
Despite my terror, a strange feeling surged through me when I saw him. It was the same way I’d felt all those times in the infirmary. A warmth seemed to pulse from the boy as if drawing me closer, urging me to look at him.
But before I could take a step, the two males who had been carrying me toward the fire approached me and gripped my wrists. “She’ll make a better meal than a warrior or a broodmare. Besides, we’ve already got enough mouths to feed.”
With that, the males began dragging me back toward the fire, intent on cooking me and eating me. Fucking
cannibals.

I screamed and clawed and bit at them, but it was no use. Ava’s strength had waned after that burst of energy. They were going to eat me. I was going to die.
But that boy-my eyes kept darting to him. To the pallor in his skin. To the dark circles under his eyes. To the wet cough.
“Wait-WAIT!” I cried out, pointing. “Wait, I can heal him!”
The males paused. Everyone looked over at the boy for a split second, but the males just shook their heads and continued carrying me toward the fire.
That was, until the old woman held up her gnarled hand. “Hold on,” she said. “I want to hear her out.”
