Chapter 51
Some of my fervor deflated. It broke my heart, knowing that they would bar me from going to Crescent Hollow to retrieve my child.
Tears filled my eyes. I released Tyler’s jacket and turned on my heel, retreating to my room without a word. Once I was alone, I threw myself onto my bed and cried into my pillow until sleep claimed me.
I wasn’t exactly sure how long I was asleep, but when I woke, it was dark. A cool hand on my shoulder woke me, and I jolted, sitting bolt upright.
Natasha was bent over me with her finger pressed to her lips. “Quiet!” she hissed. “If they hear, they’ll stop us.”
I blinked the sleep from my eyes and stared at her in confusion. “What do you want?”
Natasha looked around as if afraid we might be overheard, then whispered, “I can help you get to Crescent Hollow. For your baby.”
“And why should I trust you?” I retorted immediately. It wasn’t as if Natasha had ever shown me such kindness. In fact, she only ever wanted me gone. She’d tried to banish me to the forest. She had immediately said I should be handed over to Kade when he sent the war threat.
But to my surprise, Natasha’s face was earnest now. “I’m a mother, too,” she whispered, standing. “I couldn’t imagine my baby being taken from me. No matter how much I dislike you, I can’t stand to sit here and watch you be separated from your child.”
I stared at her for a moment, searching her face, but found no lie in her eyes. Even Ava was intrigued by her offer.
“If I follow you, you won’t turn on me?” I asked.
Natasha shook her head. “I have an escort waiting to take you to Crescent Hollow tonight. They’ll help you retrieve your child and bring you both back safely.”
It sounded risky, but I was desperate. In that moment, my desperation outweighed my logic. So I nodded, grabbed my training knife from my bedside table and my cloak from the closet, and followed Natasha out of the room.
We weren’t noticed as we slipped out the servants’ door and down the path to the wall. With our hoods up and the moon merely a sliver in the sky, even the guards on patrol didn’t notice us.
Natasha led me to the wall, then helped hoist me up over a partially crumbled section. “The escort is waiting just down the road,” she whispered. “Follow the road and take a right at the fork. They’re waiting in a black car.”
“I swear to the Goddess, Natasha, if this is a trap-”
“It’s not.” Natasha fixed me with a firm stare as I perched on top of the stone wall. “Elena, my husband and son adore you. If I did anything to hurt you at this point, they’d have my head. Trust me-I’m not that stupid.”
A little alarm in the back of my mind was still going off, but neither Ava nor I could detect a lie in Natasha’s words. Besides, I would be careful and return home if anything seemed amiss.
Finally, with a nod, I slipped down the other side of the wall.
The forest was dark and quiet. The only sounds were that of my feet padding across the pine needle-covered ground and a distant owl. I moved as silently as possible, darting from tree to tree, eyes constantly scanning for signs of rogues.
There was nothing.
