Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 54

Chapter 54

Elena’s POV

It had only been a couple of months since I had last set foot in Crescent Hollow. Not nearly long enough.

The pack derived its name from the tall mountain that stood just behind it, towering above the entire territory like a great, looming claw reaching into the sky. The mountain had a hooked peak, hence the name: Crescent Peak.

Right now, the moon was hanging perfectly in the sky, just above the mountain’s highest point. No one had ever summited that mountain before because of the shape, although many had tried, and a few had even died during their attempts.

I suppressed a shudder at the sight of it. It was beautiful and terrible all at once-the perfect symbol of the same pack that had taken everything from me.

The grounds of Crescent Hollow itself were well-maintained, although the ground was rocky. Given the proximity to the mountain, the temperature was colder year-round. A light snow had already dusted the ground at some point recently, although much of it was melted now.

I darted from building to building, knowing the layout of the pack like the back of my hand. There was a town with various shops and houses, the clinic, the groundkeeper’s cottage, a few farms.

For all intents and purposes, the town was quite idyllic. It was only the Alpha House in the distance, where Kade lived, that cast an eerie pall over the place.

The Alpha House was dark and gothic, with tall spires reaching into the night sky in a similar fashion as the mountain. I’d always wondered if the original architects had designed the house with the mountain in mind; the peak was perfectly positioned behind the house, after all.

But now was no time to be staring up at the house. I had to move, and quickly.

I decided to stop in the packhouse first, where I once lived, to see if I could gather any information on my child. The house was quiet when I slipped in through the back door that was always left unlocked. Most everyone had gone to bed already.

Recalling each and every creaky floorboard was like second nature. I crept through the halls, hopping over spots that I knew to make noise if I stepped on them, and stuck to the shadows.

Carefully, I peered into the communal sleeping area where most of the Omegas who didn’t work in the Alpha House lived. Most of the bunks were filled, and all the lights were out. No one stirred. 1

I didn’t see any babies or children, so I quietly slipped out. Down the hall was the little closet that I used to live in; it crossed my mind that Kade, perhaps out of some sick sense of humor, might make my child sleep there.

But the room was empty. Just a collection of mops, brooms, and other cleaning supplies. My little cot was gone.

I shivered and shut the door, glad to not look in there again, and kept moving. But just as I was about to move toward the exit, someone rounded the corner and collided with me.

“Oh! You scared the shit out of me!” A female Omega with brown hair braided over one shoulder, wearing her nightgown, clutched her chest. She had a glass of milk in one hand and a plate of cookies in the other.

I recognized her immediately. Shit. This was Francine-one of the other Omegas who I had known during my time here.

Francine was one of my biggest bullies. Usually, it was the Gammas who tormented me the most, but the other

Omegas were unkind in their own right. They often went out of their way to exclude me and ostracise me whenever they could, and Francine was the worst.
